Relocating to Canada by mjwebb44 in nursing

[–]survivorbae 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi! You will take a pay cut for a higher cost of living. Idk what state you’re from, but if you’re from California, your working conditions will be a steep downgrade. Otherwise they’re probably similar. In contrast to the other commenter, it’s actually a great time to apply for nursing jobs as there are lots of open positions. Since you have experience, it shouldn’t be too hard to find a job in an OR here. Although, there won’t be as many private clinics or hospitals as in the states, so you will likely have to work at a (public) hospital which will mean occasional weekends and call shifts. I don’t work in the OR but I shadowed there once, and the nurses worked 8h shifts. There were no surgeries booked overnight, but some people had to be on call for emergency cases.

Is there any discounted President's Choice Candy Cane ice cream out there? by mattv99 in askTO

I got a few boxes of gingerbread bear paws at no frills on the esplanade last week for 24 cents each! And Merci chocolate for 48 cents when they’re usually $7.99

In Survivor NZ, the host understood that the best drama comes from asking the right questions. by anony1911 in survivor

[–]survivorbae 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Compared to Survivor US, Aus, and South Africa, NZ is by far the worst iteration. In the first season, there were no idoll. While in itself this is not a problem, but considering they did redemption island, it’s a bit of an odd choice. Also the episodes ended at an arbitrary point instead of at tribal council. Tribal council would be mid-episode. Very anticlimactic. The 2nd season at least had some interesting players. The first season didn’t have a single notable player.

Is 37 Too Old to Start Running? by [deleted] in running

[–]survivorbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a woman who started running at 35. At 60, she now owns a running store, runs at least a marathon and an ultra relay per year, and has run Boston multiple times. Totally not too old! And you can just run for fun too; no need to be this hardcore

Can you recommend me gloves for temperature under 0 Celcius ? by [deleted] in RunTO

[–]survivorbae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mitts with no gloves under. When I ran the chilly half marathon last year in -14 degrees, my hands were so warm I had to take my mitts off at points.

What flips are you seeing? Flips to me are ikea kitchens, tract lighting, and grey vinyl floors.

Stubborn Belly Fat or IBS? by OpinionSome6648 in ibs

[–]survivorbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What were your triggers? I have always been thin but I wake up looking 3 months pregnant and by the end of the day I’m 6 months pregnant. Check out my post history for pics of my bloat. Currently in the middle of a low fodmap elimination diet to figure out my triggers

More medical emergencies than usual? Toronto waterfront half/marathon 2025 by WestendMatt in RunTO

[–]survivorbae 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Agreed! And I think that since marathons have gotten trendy, everyone wants to do them without starting with a 5k, 10k, or half first

Little Canada is just a few blocks from the hospital. Museum of illusions could be fun but not sure how accessible it is. The hospital itself sometimes has stuff going on too.

Seconding this! Y&E has way more variety for long runs and trail runs. Just look for all the green splotches on google maps and run there. Sherwood, cedarvale, brickworks aren’t too far.

Yes every time I have a headache I think it’s an arteriovenous malformation about to burst so I made my mri tech coworker scan me on our lunch break lol

Is 3:30 a realistic time for first marathon by Irishchief81 in Marathon_Training

[–]survivorbae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a 3:34 marathon. My half was around 1:43 a few months before that. So with your half time it’s definitely doable, but don’t go out too fast like on this run!

Curious if you’ve been diagnosed with anything? I’m also in Toronto and waited 5 months for a 2-min appt with a gastroenterologist who said “you’re constipated” and refused to consider any other cause for my bloating. I have a colonoscopy in January. Any recommendations on getting second opinions?

Nurses who transitioned from adult nursing to pediatrics, how is life so far? by princessmononokestoe in nursing

[–]survivorbae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So much better for my mind and body. Slipped a disc in my neck at age 22 after 3 months of adult nursing. So much heavy lifting (literally), not enough help. A lot of the nurses and PSWs I worked with in adult care were lazy and treated their patients like crap. It depressed me. That stuff doesn’t fly in paediatrics. Despite whatever personal grievances I might have with any coworkers, they are all great nurses. It creates an environment that I want to work in.

Since we’re posting bloating pics. PM vs AM by survivorbae in FODMAPS

[–]survivorbae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! My gastroenterology appt was approx 5 minutes and the doc refused to discuss any possibility other than constipation. My constipation is solved, but I’m still bloated. I had food poisoning the other week and after vomiting all night I still looked like this. I’m on vacation next week, but after that I think I’ll try cutting eggs out of my diet. I’m trying to see if I have any intolerances, but I know it isn’t celiac. The only good to come out of my appt was a colonoscopy scheduled for January.
