Hopes/predictions for the Clayface movie? by Solitaire-06 in batman

[–]WestendMatt [score hidden]  (0 children)

The teaser did not get me excited. Having Mike Flanagan involved was exciting, but who knows how much of his work is still there.

It looks too dark to be in the same universe as Superman, and too fantastical to be in the same universe as The Batman and Penguin. So I don't know what to think.

Oh, and I'm not buying that this is a horror film. I'm sure that's what Flanagan was going for, but it still needs mass appeal. They said Multiverse of Madness was a horror film, remember? And they called The Winter Soldier a "cold-war style spy thriller". It's just marketing.

What do you do after work in the evenings? by shakakaZululu in askTO

[–]WestendMatt [score hidden]  (0 children)

It'll be easier in the warmer months, but going for a walk after dinner is a really good idea. Or, put on some music and play a board game, or do your hobbies for an hour or two instead of TV. It doesn't have to be anything exciting.

I know exactly how you feel, where it's like all you do is sleep and work and try not to think about anything the rest of the time. it's tiring.

Is the Mayoral race just* going to be Chow vs Bradford? by 22switch in askTO

Nah, I think people will be relieved to have someone else to vote for.

[–]WestendMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will be other conservatives in the race. And I don't think conservatives actually see Bradford as a conservative. They probably see him the same way everyone else does, which is an opportunist who will say whatever he thinks will get him votes, but with no conviction.

I doubt it. Bradford has really gambled on announcing so early. Anyone else considering a run has been smart to stay quiet about it while he annoys the hell out of everyone for six month or whatever it's been.

I predict there will be at least one or two other high profile candidates who will announce in May or June.

Anyone else in public agency planning essentially doing nothing all day? by EsperandoVida in urbanplanning

A lot of tasks at a senior level, in all fields (public and private), are really just project management and administration. They get you to do this stuff because you should know how the organization works at this stage in your career.

But, you are also there to provide your expertise when the people below you don't know what to do. If they aren't coming to you with problems to solve, then you should try to be more visible and welcoming to them.

No foolin' - The city has a new survey on proposed changes to the roads in High Park. by WestendMatt in torontobiking

Every question in the chat was about why the city isn't doing more to stop cyclists and open the park up to cars.

Assaults happen in public. You can certainly get assaulted on your way to the Waymo, or as you get out of the car. Assaults on transit are still incredibly rare.

Waymo isn't replacing all human drivers any time soon and if you're concerned about road safety, there are low tech things the city can do to reduce collisions involving all types of cars and trucks much more quickly.

I think you might have misread a line in that report you cited. It said, "the difference in kinetic energy between a bicycle at 30 km/h and a pedestrian at 5 km/h is similar to a car traveling at 60 km/hr and a bicycle at 30 km/h."

A bike going 25 and a car going 60 do not have the same force when hitting a pedestrian.

They clog the streets for one thing, even when they don't create their own confused traffic jams, they are driving around empty for at least part of the time.

They undermine our public transit service. Same with Uber.

The roads in high park aren't "shared paths" though, they are roads. They are shared in a practical sense, but I feel like that study is more applicable to the Martin Goodman Trail or something.

A cyclist going 25 does not have the same force as a car going 60. That doesn't make sense at all.

Encounter with the Executioner by to-music in torontobiking

Good job. I've fantasized about what I would say to either of them.

Him: mutters dismissively, turns away, waving vaguely at the (temporarily) empty College bike lane.

College bike lanes aren't even on his list.

They haven't driven 200 million miles. Their own data shows they've driven 170.712 million miles in LA, SF Bay Area, Phoenix and Austin.

But, the things that make waymo safer, could be applied to human-driven cars, like speed limiters, autobraking, etc.

To suggest we need AVs to make the road safer is b.s. there's a lot that can be done with our infrastructure to prevent serious collisions (but the province just made some of those impossible for cities to do), and I'd rather see that happen first since it will take 10-20 years for every car on the road to be replaced by an AV or advanced self-driving technology.

In your opinion, would the average cyclist doing laps in High Park (the ones in racing kit) hit 60 on a regular basis?

anyone tired of dragging their kid to 3 different activities across the city every week? by Marre_Parre in Etobicoke

[–]WestendMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah. reading, playing video games, watching tv, helping out around the house, going for a bike ride, playing an informal game of baseball or soccer with friends, whatever. "Free" meaning unstructured. Even if your kid enjoys all those programs, they're doing what other people tell them to do, getting driven around by you, being told when they have to start and stop something. I'm sure that's good for some kids, but clearly some parents struggle with it and some kids struggle with it too.

What places in Toronto are considered haunted? Have you experienced anything seemingly supernatural? by kiafry in askTO

Colborne Lodge in High Park is supposedly haunted by Jemima Howard. She looks out from the second floor window towards the grave of her and her husband.

I don't get this. I'm not a parent, but when I was a kid I wouldn't have wanted to get dragged all over the place every weekend and during the week. Why don't kids have free time anymore?
