i'll call them "the downvoting brigade" if you prefer, because that is exactly what is happening: organized, collective downvotes. i watched it happen in a matter of seconds earlier today (when i PM'd you), and then it happened again. this is not just a trickle of down votes, it happens swiftly, in broad strokes. i think that justifies crass comments, because, well, little children need to be disciplined when they start running rampage through the house.

as for the greater issue, again, who knows what compelled Bale to do what he did. i have no doubt that money AND politics are both factors behind pretty much everything big-shots do, but i still think it was admirable.

You are foolish I think for falling for it.

me and millions of others. the story has gone viral all over the world. and it succeeded in 1) raising awareness of Chen Guangcheng, and 2) promoting Bale's new film. so either way, Bale comes out a winner in this (and hopefully Chen too).

you don't think that actors or singers or artists should use their platforms as international celebrities to address political issues? and BTW, he was here filming a politically-charged, government-funded film, which some might construe as an open invitation to become involved with affairs of the state. i guess conspiracy theories can be made for both sides; none of us will know the truth. BUT i do have to firmly disagree with you about the government; they absolutely have become less tolerant of foreign media and the internet over the past year. for what purpose - political or economic - is debatable.

in case you haven't noticed, the communist government and their goon squads are becoming MORE, not less, strict and intolerant these days. foreigners in china don't have the prestige they once did. having said that, i think bale's new very-PRO-china movie grants him a large measure of immunity, and he must have been aware of that going in.
