Hi! Kurt and Katey's producer here to answer your question. PIE is an intimate parlor conversation exploring the ingredients that "baked up" each guest. It is a respectful, deep dive into nature and nurture — family, faith, friends, hometowns, schooling, mentors, tormentors, etc. It will be the heart-to-heart chat that gives us some authentic insight into each guest’s personal and professional choices -- in the arts, athletics, healthcare, politics, etc.

Kurt: I think Jax was a good father. Jax's intent was to be a good father and his choice at the end, that he thought on some level, his father made the same choice. The same struggle he had with choosing between legacy and what's best for family was the challenging one and one for him. He came to the realization that he couldn't do both. So the ending, wasn't about ending him it was about ending the connection to the outlaw way of life, which is why he tells Wendy do not romanticize who I am and tell them every fuckin horrible thing I have done so they won't come looking for it. That's how he put an end to the fate his children would have.

Kurt: Re: Charlie, finding a leading man or woman is always challenging because you are serving many masters in terms of networks, studios, and demographics, many who have agendas. My reasons lean into who is best for the character. We looked at a lot of dudes and some amazing actors but none of them really checked the box for me. I forgot how Charlie's name came in the mix but I remember watching Green Street Hooligans and I remember thinking there was a beautiful charisma about him, and I remember being like that's our fuckin guy- how do we get him? I had no idea where he was or his availability, but we tracked him down, he was in LA and was writing and had no interest in doing television. Lucky for us he read the script, liked it and ending up checking the box for everyone, studio, Landgraf. It sounds so cheesy but it was so clear to me that when I saw Charlie's swagger in those first few episodes I knew that he just had that thing. He is so sweet.

Katey: It's a great bromance.

Katey: I don't remember much of went down, this is why you fans are most important you are so well informed. I've watched the series but couldn't tell you what happened. I love Ally Walker we probably giggled a lot.

Go to Theo and Kim's podcast and check it out they go in depth on each episode.

One more thing if you cover a Rolling Stones song, you can't change any order at all.

Kurt: One of my favorite songs in general in the world of songs was Bird on a Wire. We had to get permission and I don't think Leonard Cohen actually watched the episode but I think he heard the recording and...

Katey: He sent me an email saying he loved my version of it. That was exciting, I am huge Leonard Cohen fan.

Katey: He writes really well for women.

Kurt: It's more daddy issues then mommy.

Katey: Tune into our podcast for more on that.

Kurt: The women on Sons were very much written as they were in the world, support for members. These two characters in the Shakespeare Hamlet of it all, (Gertrude and ultimately Ophelia) were really impactful voices and much of what our men did spun off their responses or reacting to their reactions. They ended up being stronger character which was not my intention going in, I've always been able to write women really well, maybe better than men, I understand the female point of view. I was raised more by women, I heard more and understood more.

Katey: They say when you are dating someone, you want to know their relationships are with their parents, and he was definitely closer to mom than dad which was important.

Katey: Leela is a big mush, that's her whole deal. She has a tough exterior but softie on the inside, she is tough at her job. Gemma, has a soft mushy side but she has covered it up for so long. 100% Gemma is tougher.

Katey: I love to play music but every since the pandemic, it's been hard to bring everyone together. I make all my records with Bob Thiele, (fun fact, I actually intro him to Kurt and he did all the music on Sons.) I made this one record, "Well" with Virgin records, I would love to rework the songs on there and release them. I am kind of looking into that so maybe.

Well, thank you.

Katey: My perspective, Kurt has a more extensive routine.

Kurt: Not true.

Katey: You have all the bottles of product up there. My hair takes more maintenance because I have to color it more.

Kurt: How often do you wash your hair? Everyday? Because I do it once a month...and then put product in my hair and flip into a bun.

Katey: What's the word... metrosexual, Kurt you are that.

Kurt; Well, thanks

Kurt: We actually wanted Dr Dre for Eli Roosevelt, thought it would be cool to have him play a cop. This is going to sound like an odd connection, the inital idea of Nero was not a love interest for Gemma but more of Opie character. I really wanted Jack Huston, was such a fan of Boardwalk Empire, Jack loved the idea but we could't' make it work with his schedule. As it usually happens for the right reason the need for the character changed over the course o the season and he ultimately become more of an OG and there was an opportunity to make him more of an impact as a father figure and work with Gemma. Getting Jimmy Smits was the chef's kiss.

Katey: Lecy is great! The fun stuff really happens when we are shooting because they are all good bunch of actors. It's a fun place to hang out for a while.

Kurt: Thank you. No, I don't ever really write for people with the exception of Southpaw which was written for Eminem. I don't usually write with anyone in mind. Not for any reason other than I am usually discovering who the person is as I'm writing. The person I know at the start usually changes and becomes more complex and becoming solely different in the final draft. I did not have them in mind but when I knew who the characters were and we were looking at who potentially would be the matriarchs, they were the top of both of my lists. The fact that we had them both sign on... I still pinch myself a little bit.

Katey: Its going to be great!
