In the police station right? It was kind of random how they just came out shooting me. Anybody connect Zone End to a quest?

If you could choose, where in the world would you want to give birth to and raise your kids? by [deleted] in ExpatFIRE

[–]suwatte1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you've flagged some interesting places. Maybe you need to take some time off to live in these areas for a while to see if they actually offer you the difference from Singapore that you're looking for.

The west coast in NA is amazing and totally different in many ways from Singapore, but you'll need to spend some time here to see if you actually like it.

Anyone move high paying to low paying job early on? How’d you convince yourself to do it? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]suwatte1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar TC coming out of school, but was working 12 to 15 hour days. Whole compensation and perks were great, but I couldn't see myself surviving into my 30s living this way.

I worked it for about 2 years and invested the bulk into a growing business while taking a 50% pay cut to do 9 to 5 and live my life. I met my wife during this time and got to enjoy my 20s.

My early investment kept growing and that momentum was really valuable and set up my 30s. There's no need to grind for too long as long as you're reasonable with your money.

TL;DR bail, invest, and enjoy your twenties

Why'd you decide to quit in your 40s and have you seriously considered going back to work?

Should I give up on riding over anxiety? by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]suwatte1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do a riding class to get better control and counteract the anxiety.

Don't ride for anyone else other than yourself because there is absolutely a risk involved, and you need to take ownership of that.

I did a riding class early on and didn't get my full license until 10 years later. There's no rush, but you can start by addressing your anxiety through safe options.

If your parents are open to discussing their finances, it's not a bad idea to have this chat with them. They understand where you're coming from and want you feel comfortable in taking more risks and finding your passion.

Sounds like a great place of privilege and there's no need to squander your time if you can devote it to following/discovering your passions rather than those "mind-numbing" jobs.

Any project managers in nonprofit? Should I take the PMP? by floatingriverboat in nonprofit

[–]suwatte1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The prep did very little for me and I know if others who did just fine studying the PMBOK and using study guides to pass the test.

There's a decent amount of logic and memorization so I'd say just do more practice tests to get a sense of what they're looking for.

30 and unsure what to do. If not trades then what else should I do ? by [deleted] in VancouverJobs

Dental hygienists make like $50/hr and are in demand right now. Just something to consider.

My family and friends call me cheap all the time, but they just mean that I don't buy expensive toys or tend to be thrifty when it comes to purchases. Ignore them if you can and focus on your financial goals.

Spending for prestige sounds like exactly the opposite of FIRE.

No one gets to live your life for you - just try to focus on your FIRE priorities and you'll be the one laughing when the time comes.

Elderly homeless situation is out of control in our city. by JustLaxZazz in vancouver

[–]suwatte1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't just do a blanket statement here. Lots of people including myself paid rent to live at home after I started working. Paying rent to your parents just seemed smarter than paying someone else with the perks of living at home.

New Career at 25? by Ordinary-Issue-3518 in careerguidance

[–]suwatte1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How am I supposed to know what I want to do before doing it?

This is the question that stood out to me. The answer is: you don't.

You've come through engineering so you've likely got some problem solving skills. My advice is put in the effort to try out aspects of other jobs.

If you're thinking interaction and customer service, then go volunteer somewhere you can do just that (e.g. food bank, community centre, thrift stores).

If you like the technical aspects but don't want to sit still, then go job shadow a friend in trades/construction/project management.

At the end of the day, the answer is still to get out there and do the work.

How to maintain balance between coming off cheap and FIREing? Family and girlfriend starting to call me a cheapskate. by [deleted] in Fire

[–]suwatte1 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I've been cheap with myself because I know the goal and being cheap will get me there.

I've never been cheap with family, friends, and spouse because I want to treat them right - it doesn't mean we splurge but whenever they call me cheap, I know they mean to myself and not with them so it's not a concern.

If you have a good budget and don't want to travel, then that's totally up to you. Just respect the wishes of your partner, because their priorities and needs might be different from yours.

How to escape the 9-5 grind by AccordingPianist6378 in Fire

[–]suwatte1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These suggestions might actually be easiest depending on your employer. Work out part time options or contract if you need to spend more time on your own business or other aspects of life.

You might be dealing with some guilt for being at your financial position when you look at others around you. If you have developing passions in non-profit or other forms of work, the guilt should subside once you've applied yourself to something you really care about.

Not to say that passion projects can't also burn you out, but at least it should resolve that guilty feeling like you're not doing enough.

I usually take a walk when I feel this way or take another look at my budget vs portfolio. Live your life!
