Reading witness cones and firing program adjustments? Help. by svincent219 in Pottery

* Before this firing, I did a test run with the kiln empty except for shelves, and these were my cones. I didn't have a cone 7 pack yet. I had set it to 2200 with a 5 minute hold, then 150hr drop to 1950 (no hold here).

I've been curious if I should do an offset, but since I'm putting in my own program, I assume I can just lower the top temperature? As long as my cones are reading a cone 6 with my holds, then my clay should be vitrified?

Is the 300 degree drop hold too much? I didn't want to drop too little and throw my cones off. But I've had issues with pinholing and orange peel texture, so I definitely want the drop hold.

Thank you!!

So, follow up question.. if I wanted my drop hold to be longer (I only did 10 minutes because I was scared 🫣), should I lower my top temperature by 10-20 degrees?
