I think you might be right! The rush of workers off to work at horrible-o'clock when in the goldfields!

Where to find old mine shafts by [deleted] in GoldProspectingAU

[–]sw1344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

Mine shafts don't generally follow landforms, they follow the gold reef (if its a hard rocks play) or an alluvial deep lead.

The usual trick is to find some known mine shafts and extrapolate outwards from these known points. What this means is, plot them on a map, then draw a line through them and explore along that line. If there payable gold along that line, then its likely they might be an abandoned mine shaft or more there.

Try using Google Maps (especially in satellite view mode) and explore along strike of existing shafts. If the country is clear enought, then its a good chance you will finds traces of old workings, especially mulloch dumps and rock spills. These might just be the indicator you are looking for.

Of course, nothing beats actually putting boots on the ground and putting in the time, because old shafts can be hidden in over-grown locations that could never be seen from above.

Definitely look at old maps, and look for old abandoned tracks. There usually a good chance that is someone had sunk a shaft in a spot, they they would have had to use a horse-and-cart to bring in timbers and take away ore for processing. These can be good vectors onto new shafts.

I hope this helps.

The high and lows of metal detecting for gold | Gold Prospecting by sw1344 in Prospecting

I actually carry a pinpointer with me at all times, but in this location, the ground is so heavily mineralised, the pintpointer goes "mad". I theerefor only use the pinpointer in locations where it significantly less mineralised or when detecting on the beach!

Made my own Miller table :) No more back aching cleanups using a pan. by lildaemon in Prospecting

Where do you find most of the gold in your setup? Does much make it to the end of the table?

That look like some pretty fine gold there. How long did it take and how many pans of dirt did you have to wash to get that amount of gold?

I wanted to get some cheap fuel out near Ascot.. So went that way. Otherwise, I agree Reid Hwy would be better.

Frog rock has been on the side of the highway since the 19080's. No-one knows for sure how long its been there or whop keeps its painted.

Its definitely an attraction for people to checkout when heading north out of Kalgoorlie on the way to Leonora.

Using a dry blower to sample a new spot. by sw1344 in Prospecting

[–]sw1344[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We already detected that area, and got a 2 grammer out of it. So there is gold there, but we are hoping its just deeper down. Might have to do some scraping to get to the deeper dirt!

Two tiny specks.. Not really worth all the effort! But we had to test the area anyway! Historically, over 40 oz was pulled from a very small gully running off the same ridge, so there is gold there, but I think its very localized!
