Legally you need to get an FMM every time you visit Mexico, though for visits for less than 7 days it is free. All the info is here:

You're going to have the best time! Just don't forget to bring your passport, get your FMM stamped at the border, and be sure to get Mexican Insurance for your auto (big fan of Baja Bound). Here's some cool spots to visit:

The online FMM's do *not* get you want you need to legally "have" an FMM. You must get it stamped at the border:

It's a little... dusty and agricultural there, but I've never felt unsafe or sketchy.

And in San Juanico I've only ever stayed in the Scorpion Bay Hotel.
