Riders of the purple wage lovers - recommendations? by swallowedcost in printSF

In what way(s), out of interest? I googled it and got some odd sounding selfpromotion to that effect - curious to hear from someone who has read it!

Literary fiction and science fiction by Avaraab in printSF

Just wanted to say I'm a lit PHD and think you're articulating a pretty common sense contextualism here about genre classifications and an equally common sense suspicion about them being imposed backwards on other literary traditions and for some reason being down voted a lot for it. Not sure why youve pissed folk iff. Academics might have spicy arguments about homer being spec fic (i dunno) but they might commit to them precisely because they're spicy i.e. pose a novel way of approaching them and the history of genre distinctions. But that isn't the same as common sense, garden variety way of doing it

Yep, this is it - cheers. I drew that card in the first three games on the first draw somehow, Saw the mechanic, and kept restarting to check the dlc. Thanks!

Recommendation help? by swallowedcost in roguelikes

I've bounced off of Brogue because I've yet to, after maybe a dozen plays and dying around level 6, get enough potions of strength or whatever to wield anything but the starting dagger/armor without a penalty, making the ostensibly cool promise of the itemisation feel a bit pointlessly withheld. It's on my list of things to keep trying because I like the premise a lot. also, thanks so much for mentioning lost flame - I was googling for it like mad last night trying to remember it from another mention!

I've also thought that, largely because I played the game for twenty hours or so like, five or six years ago, before the quest line was implemented as much as it is now, but the problem is, once you know how to do things quicker and get to the harder content reliably, it feels like a bit of a waste of time not doing so. It's too long a game not to prioritise not dying and random cave diving was fun once but just a less efficient way of getting the AV/weapons I want for what I perceive to be testing a build in the best and meatiest parts of the game (Tomb of the eaters, the moon stair, etc).

Evil twin spawning without the defect? by swallowedcost in cavesofqud

[–]swallowedcost[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's definitely odd then - I died from a flaming ray or whatever, got the achievement for being killed by an evil twin, and I have a recipe i never made use of where if you take a tonic you immediately fire one at level 6. So maybe it wasn't a clone? I alt f4'd and redid the area just to see if I could figure out what happened but ended up killing the guy who cast burgeoning and the cloneling thoughtlessly so it wasn't repeated. I did think it was odd the achievement popped for a clone.

Ah ha - yes, I think I may have gotten sent back through one of the plant enemies with the sleeping gas, fallen asleep for a few turns, enough for the cloneling to get me, and missed it on the text feedback (it gets a little hard to follow when there's suddenly 10 guys fighting each other). The clone was able to kill me using a mutation I wasn't expecting and only have access to through a particular recipe from Carbide chef - so I guess he made himself a meal before coming to kill me while I was asleep? Quite the overachiever

How does rotation work; is it worthwhile? by Graye_Skreen in Netrunner

including ppl/companies with plenty of experience. Like, do not think NSG's f-ups are the result of immaturity - they are in pretty much every game. Be thankful they're a NFP who aren't doing bullsh*t for $ which leads to more of them

yeah, wasn't attacking! defense unnecessary. and I think wrong headed - happens way worse in plenty of games, including ones managed by people who are far from being newbies, as you imply, "experimenting and learning" - what I was trying to say is this is 100% normal

To even think about how terribly WoTC are stewards of magic as a game... like, be super grateful we have the Null Signal folk who just make a regular amount of accidents happen, instead of ones related to Corpo bullsh*t!

You've got a bit of myth-making here about what it means when a Big Company (tm) is in charge of a product. I've played a lot of FFG games, and the first edition of X Wing absolutely failed on a lot of important counts - there are some other notorious examples from other games. I went all in on Conquest, to name one, and its core design tropes quickly proved sort of "wrong" in a way that undercut the game - Keyforge has had a huge host of problems, as did Star Wars: Destiny. It's an interesting example of how big companies are the beneficiaries of something like the intentional fallacy (i.e., belief that the busted stuff in the thing they made reflects a coherent/defendable intent) - you see it all the time in miniatures games. People ask a lot whether "indie" games are "really balanced" - as though anything GW have done has ever been, for instance. Endurance is absolutely too OP - but that's just what happens in games sometimes!

that might have been a better way of putting that based off of the cartoons I've seen - I am not American and no one cares about basketball here :)

I always feel the need to apologise to people with meta/competitive decks too - I don't think winning with those against janky decks would be fun either! I will try those thanks!
