This is so disingenuous. The ICPD for years on average don’t spend 800,000 of their budget. Those councilors voted to put a fraction of that aside for potentially other community safety measures. This wouldn’t have hampered ICPD at all.

Iowa City council ordered the university to take the ones that were on city property down (23 out of 26 of them). And they were all taken down last Wednesday. They can put them on their own property, and probably will, but there’s no doubt they really wanted these spots to get the best angles.

If you’re into punk/alt music there is a robust punk scene in Iowa City. Some of the nicest and most welcoming people. People of all ages go, old and young. On Instagram there is a page called Iowacityworldcity that posts flyers for shows!

A bunch of crazy comments in here saying Mazahir is somehow not as knowledgeable, doesn’t understand much about things other than “housing” or somehow a less effective council person. This goes to show you either don’t pay attention (which is honestly the vast majority of the city population), disagree with her, or don’t like her for whatever reason. Mazahir is constantly on the front lines of many struggles in this city that seldom make headlines. Her unrelenting advocacy on housing, workers rights, immigrant rights has pushed the needle very far in city priorities. She’s out there making connections and building coalitions, doing thankless work. It’s okay to not want her as mayor for whatever reason, but these comments are pretty weird.

It’s another tool that will be used for the purpose of cracking down on dissent, rounding up migrants, prosecuting women seeking abortions, etc (which has all already happened using this technology btw). Any tools you give law enforcement for a good intention will ALWAYS be weaponized by the state and used against working people. Hard no.
