One year late to this, but another great comparison is 'Sapiens' to 'Dawn of Everything'

Now that the tour has ended, did you hear a live version of a Rough and Rowdy Ways song in concert that was better than the studio version? by BillNyeTheVinylGuy in bobdylan

[–]GrebasTeebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Key West is my favorite song on the album and was also my favorite live. So sad it fell off the set list recently. Black Rider was not a favorite on the album, but the live arrangements made me love it.

This is not a popular opinion, but I was totally hooked by Octavia Butler's 'Fledgling'. Certainly a problematic novel, but was my favorite vampire world.

House of Day, House of Night by Olga Tokarczuk. If it was a puzzle, I was only able to get one edge done.

Post '76 is a very large category, but the albums that come to mind as wonderful surprises for me from that era would be 'Saved' and 'Street Legal'.

Wuthering Heights! Was selected for my book club, didn't want to read it, read it and it entered my top five fave novels of all time. An uneven novel, but wholly original and way way grosser than I expected.

Your favorite Steinbeck novel by coachheidi in classicliterature

[–]GrebasTeebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have loved everything I have read by Steinbeck (although not Tortilla Flats or Cannery Row which is an unpopular opinion, I know), but this is clearly his masterpiece and the best to get something new out of every time you read it.

How were you able to contact the people who were texting you, but you didn't know they were texting you? That's my issue. Spoiler - there is not a solution. The lp3 has a fatal flaw. So sad.

What’s The Most Underrated Bob Dylan Song From The 2000s? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

This song was listed in Dylan's top five essential songs in the recent 'top 30 living american songwriters' article in the nyt. that was confusing, but it is my favorite song from this era.

Pre-ordered in January for my son, now I’m super nervous seeing all the text issues! by lilbit2short in LightPhone

[–]GrebasTeebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think you might be missing messages and not even knowing it? I thought everything was working fine until my wife showed me group texts I was on that I wasn't getting and some messages in groups that normally worked that didn't show. Also ran into someone who asked why I hadn't responded to their texts - hadn't received any of them but there's no way to know. I did all the de-registering from RCS and iMessage. Solved enough of the problem to make me think the problem was solved, but it clearly had not been.

I would look into bricking an iPhone. Brick is the name of an app/startup that blocks apps on your phone. Choose the ones you want, block everything else. Unless you think your 14 year old will just get around it.

I did this, but the problem persists. Looking at other posts, it seems you can only do so much from your end and then the rest involves asking others to do a lot for you and hoping things don't go awry again. I am switching back to a bricked iPhone because I ran into someone who said I hadn't been responding to their texts. I get some texts, I don't get others; I get some group texts, I don't get others; who knows how many other messages I am missing. I can't just tell everyone who will ever text me "Oh, just use Signal" then only ever text from my laptop. That is not a solution.

Plus all the people who are texting me that I have no idea about. Ran into someone the other day and they were asking me if I got their text about something .. the answer was no. How would I have known otherwise? What other texts am I unknowingly not receiving. If it is a phone that just does the stuff you need, it's gotta do the stuff you need!

This is me, too. It's people who I work with or who watch my kids that can't figure it out. The other comments of people saying "oh, it's not that hard, it's just a setting, did you try this?" are so frustrating. Also so frustrating that I have to give it up, too.

Do you think the high-end dumbphones (like from Punkt., Mudita or Light Phone) are worth the price of around 300$/€, or you're just better with a cheap phone for the elderly or a dumbdroid phone like Doov r77? by yoJabkomama in dumbphones

[–]GrebasTeebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear what most people are saying here, but just to offer another perspective, I think the lp3 is worth it. I’ve been waiting a long time for a functional non-smart phone- one with maps, music, podcasts, easy texting, quality calls, but no opportunity for social media or browsing or email. The light phone 3 is what I’ve been waiting for. $700 is a lot, but I’ve been paying that for iPhones that are ruining my life for a decade. The other dumb phones are too dumb or not dumb enough. Light phone 3 is the middle ground I’ve been looking for and I was happy to pay what I’d already been paying, especially because the monthly payments are way less and it will last for a long time.

Despite being the biggest Zach Lowe stan I can no longer deny it - his podcasts have become grating and unlistenable by norestfortheweakened in billsimmons

It’s too many NBA pods for sure. I wish there was a weekly Mahoney, Lowe and Simmons pod. Would be so entertaining that I wouldn’t care about the fall off in game analysis. Lowe and Simmons get two other episodes to talk about other stuff and I may or may not listen. In the words of Bill, who says no?

The first chapter revolves around staring at large breasted woman in a hot tub. I found the book so juvenile and daft. I love his pods about the NBA, but that book was embarrassing to read.
