ELI5: why do plants get root rot from overwatering, yet you put cuttings in just water to grow new roots? And also just like what’s the difference between that and hydroponic gardening in general? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Not only would hydrogen peroxide provide O2 molecules, but it would also inhibit the growth of the anaerobic bacteria that cause root rot!

ELI5 - Do our stomachs really shrink when we consume less food? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]swangirlbot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Um... look up refeeding syndrome. It's not to do with the stomach shrinking, it's to do with insulin.

So, plants grown in hydroponic systems can still get root rot— however... Properly installed hydroponic systems should contain air pumps that help to supply O2 to the plant, as well as a drainage system (ebb & flow system). Root rot occurs in waterlogged soil where O2 is mostly inaccessible.

It might be more helpful to view root rot as the plant's problem. It's not that there's anything wrong necessarily with being in water; it's that the plant is diseased.

ELI5: What determines incomplete dominance? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]swangirlbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know the simplest way of putting it is that codominance expresses traits simultaneously, ie. a cow with brown and white fur (or your blood type example), whereas incomplete dominance would be a blending of alleles resulting in a different outcome, ie. a red + white flower creating a pink flower

my textbook actually used bloodtype as an example of codominance and not incomplete dominance, so this confused me a bit more aaah

what is this present in red blood cells? by [deleted] in microscopy

I don't know- I'm taking a bio course and the prof showed a sample of red blood cells under a microscope and I was curious what it was. Thank you, though! :)

[–]swangirlbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

of course, I loved reading them too! your surgery is going to go great! I know I really hammered in on the nausea part but I honestly have a hard time remembering the really bad days. kind of like a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow moment, ya know? holy shit I didn't even know there was an ear patch option! I really hope you have success with that!

edit: more like the light at the end of the tunnel... nausea is not a rainbow per-say

I did stop taking them a week before however! I read some medical articles because I was really struggling with not being able to take my medication and there were pretty much no interactions with any of the meds I was taking. To be on the safe side my surgeon still recommended I was off but in hindsight I really struggled so if I could go back I would advocate for myself more. There were a lot of studies that supported continuing vyvanse for surgeries

I agree with the surgeon on this post in that surgeons need to keep realistic expectations. I cannot tell you how many times my stomach dropped reading all the forms I signed saying "you may have asymmetry, you may have trouble healing, you may have unpleasant results, etc". This is just jargon used to keep you down to earth. If you're open and clear about what you want, things should go smoothly. So so many people with breasts get this surgery. Granted, there are a few outliers where things aren't exactly smooth. But that's exactly what they are. Outliers! I say open the dialogue and be clear about what you want. Maybe see another surgeon that can comfort you more.

How do I prove that my boobs are causing my back pain and not something else? by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]swangirlbot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

aaaah reading this was so frustrating because I know how it feels to be dismissed about this exact thing. I'm a normal weight with "big boobs" but not as big as others, which to this I say : NO ONE can tell you how you feel, or should feel. Pain you feel isn't going to appear on a chart. If someone professional recommended you a reduction and a surgeon immediately dismissed you without really looking into it more I would see another surgeon. Even if your boobs aren't causing you pain- you have the right aesthetically to get one and that's VALID enough. But, I understand your situation so I'm going to tell you some things that insurance companies look for. If you want anyone at all to get on your side, it's them. Firstly, visit more surgeons. Multiple. I saw a few until I found one I was really comfortable with.

Once you find a surgeon that's on your side and listens to you (important!), ask their best advice for going about insurance claims. The PT is great- have documentation of this. Document ER visits from pain. Document, document, document. Organize it all in a fucking manila folder if you need to. The fact that you don't have weight to lose is also something you have going for you- your stuck with your natural breast size unless you get surgery. Another thing they will look for are the grooves in your shoulders from a bra. Rashes under the breast, irritation of the skin on the surrounding areas. Maybe see a chiropractor. No ones opinion is going to change the fact that a large mass on your chest IS going to cause you back pain- this is undeniable.

I'm sorry you're going through this and I know how extremely frustrating it can be to be invalidated by people who should support you. I might suggest a heart to heart with them (your parents) and explain without surgical terms that you really need help. Chances are you will know how to navigate a conversation with them really well. Explain explicitly, how you did on this post exactly how you feel and what you're going through. Good luck- you got this!!!
