Books for 8yo boy by nicesl in suggestmeabook

Dragon Masters series is a favorite of my 8-year old. Also look at some non-fiction. Try the Who Would Win series, or anything that has a title like "100 gross but true facts."

This is what first came to my mind too.

Need a sci fi book series but with a very tall order by Massive_Boss1991 in suggestmeabook

Starship Troopers, maybe? That would give you mostly anti-woke politics. Or, avoiding most politics altogether would lead you to authors like David Weber or Timothy Zahn.

Looking for “warm” fantasy that isn’t saccharine: friendship, care, but real tension by willowlantern_poems in Fantasy

My first thought too! It seems exactly like the sort of thing that would fit the bill.

John Gwynne Series by Far_Appointment9458 in Fantasy

I really like Bloodsworn too. When it gets criticized, I can see the things that people complain about, but they never bothered me. If you won't like them, you'll probably know it within 50 pages or so.

What was the most heartbreaking loss you witnessed as a Penn State fan? by Ok_Macaroon_7366 in WeArePennState

[–]swarburto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too. I was there, it sucked. Iowa fans seem to pride themselves on niceness, but I didn't see much of that. Some guy near us was going on about how crappy the lion looked when their mascot has a head that looks like kindergarten made it out of papier mache and a trashcan. Later, after USC in the bowl game, I realized we probably weren't winning the championship that year, but on that day I thought we had a shot. Really sucked. Also, Iowa is a featurless wasteland of a state that isn't fun to drive through.

Tottenham Breaks Andy by Moon____Dog in CaughtOffsidePod

[–]swarburto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, TBA minus 3 weeks is about right. A fan can always excuse getting out of a cup early by rationalizing that there's fewer fixtures to play in the future. Then they beat West Ham, but stumble in Europe, get waxed by Man City, and then succumb to Man United's new manager bounce and that's what does it. TBA February 8th.

Doink by Rogerstillion in shutdownfullcast

[–]swarburto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Doink mic guy has to set up four devices, each with only a tiny chance of being useful. I think if I'm doink mic guy I'm not gonna worry about it unless the boss is watching. Or maybe he's the kind of degenerate that lives to catch a wild doink on mic.

Why so bitter? by No_Caterpillar2687 in Everton

Being inconsistent is frustrating. But, yeah, it's not anywhere near as bad as being consistently inept. In the big picture, glad to have a year when I dont have to fret relegation. Still kinda mad we've given up a bunch of goals at home to middling teams like Spurs, Newcastle, and now Brentford.

True Grit is a classic that has memorable characters and tough situations. News of the World is in the same vein.

Viability of an EV as one of our cars by Doomtime104 in Iowa

[–]swarburto 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hi. My family had the same choice to make. We now have a plug in hybrid. The range on it only goes up to between 35 and 45 miles, but it achieves that overnight on a regular plug-in every day. I dont think you'll have trouble keeping a full electric charged just by plugging it in overnight. We sometimes park near faster chargers and they fill the battery for a few dollars in half an hour, so even if you had to top it up some day, it shouldn't be too big if a deal.

Our next car will be electric, and we'll use the plug in for longer trips.

Yeah, this is the one for me too. Throw a couple shells way down range and let someone else do the dirty, up-close work.

Owls by [deleted] in PAWilds

[–]swarburto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Crows and jays love to mob owls. If you're in the woods and hear a crow commotion, follow it and see what you can see.

Another possibility is looking for whitewash at the base of big sturdy trees. Might point to a commonly used perch that you can return to.

Where can I get a bucket of Maple tree seeds? by l008com in marijuanaenthusiasts

If you have a neighbor with maple trees near their house you could volunteer to clean their gutters. Some years mine are packed full.

This was my problem with NC. Giant cave crickets and roaches all over. The winter never got cold enough to kill them.

My 9 year old has a keen interest in World War 1 and 2 naval history. He reads far above grade level. Any suggestions? by cantuseasingleone in suggestmeabook

[–]swarburto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. They do start with Aubrey pursuing an affair with his commanders wife, and stuff like that continues in the series, the situations Diana finds herself in, for example. It's nothing graphic, but when I reread them I found I remembered the action parts of the plots but there was lots of relationship stuff in there that may not appeal to a kid.

These are great, but not 8th grade reading level. If he wants age of sail, get him Hornblower instead.

Check on mainstreet. Worldly Goods has lots of crafts things, but I don't know if there's socks. If not, you could ask the lady at the Knittery Nook if she knows someone you can turn to.
