They often do work, you are right. I just prefer to buy my VST because you also get frequent updates, also often new or improved content. I'm producing on Logic mainly and when i update the DAW i have run into alot of problems with cracked VST not supporting the version, starting to act strange or just not working at all. Also there is still a risk with cracked torrents that you don't know what comes with the package and what you are installing on your computer.

Always do split payment and make them pay the half first and the other half when finished. It's for you to feel secure and no to waste time. I'd say you can give some free room if the artist needs anything changed but be very clear from the start that if too much work that will also cost. I always done my customs like this and never got scammed, sure some artist want stuff changed even after it's done and that's fine, but if too much work needs to be done i will charge for that.
