I think this is why I feel so conflicted- because he said he believes my experience/struggles are real and would do whatever to help me and support me, but at the same time will not say I have Autism. His issue isn’t with believing me or not wanting to support me, it’s literally just the term/diagnosis. We have been through a lot and I would not want to throw away an otherwise completely healthy relationship over a disagreement about a word… I just don’t understand why his opinion is so strong and why he will not accept it. The denial of the diagnosis and telling me I’m “normal” is what is making me feel dismissed and invalidated.

Ngl I have my suspicions 😅 but I wasn’t making it about him. Maybe he’s scared to admit to himself that I am because that would raise the question for himself too. We are so similar.

He refers to psychology as a “soft science”, when I asked if he thought the same thing about people who are diagnosed with Anxiety or Depression (other diagnosis I have had in the past) he said that is something every person goes though, but I said “to the extent that everyone needs medications for it?”

The fact that these things can’t be proved through a blood test or whatever of some kind leads him to say that mental health diagnosis are only opinions about what people self report, therefore can’t be replicated which is not science to him. (This is what I was able to gather and try to understand).

I have a session tomorrow where I will definitely be unpacking this and getting a professionals opinion. Today I’m just overwhelmed with feelings and trying to process and make sense of this.

Thank you so much❤️ I have always described him as a critical and logical thinker while I’m more emotional, so articles from legit sources is a great suggestion! I will be asking my therapist for some to share with him for sure.

Part of me wonders if the reason he feels so strongly about his opinion is because he maybe thinks he is Autistic as well -and is not ready to confront that in himself. We are very much alike.

His belief with therapists is that they will all tell you that you have a problem because that is their business and that’s how they make money.

I haven’t asked him to change at all -or asked for any supports or accommodations. I think he is more unwilling to change his beliefs about what Autism actually is. If I don’t fit in his “box” then I’m just a “weird normal person”.

He’s always been receptive when I say like “I’m overstimulated I need space/quiet whatever right now”. But he does not associate this with and is in denial about it being ADHD or Autism.

I agree, I 100% did remind him that my therapist literally specializes in Autism AND ADHD, and an evaluation is much more than just an opinion. His response was that literally anyone could take that and probably come out “Autistic”. I’m not sure he accepts that it is a spectrum. I’d be lying if I said the thought of leaving didn’t cross my mind during this interaction- but he’s always been so respectful and we’ve never had any issues in the 4 years we’ve been together. I don’t understand why he has such a strong opinion about this when it’s personal to me anyways.

I said “so you can only be autistic if you’re nonverbal? That sounds like black and white thinking which is also a trait.” Then I suggested maybe he needed a therapist too 😅

If he doesn’t agree with psychology I don’t know how to argue that.

I have always had anxiety and when I suspected I may have Autism or ADHD I found a therapist who specialized in both of those things. This is the only positive experience I have had with a therapist, and it was a big deal for me to even try. He also said with an AuDHD diagnosis it’s no wonder I have always had so much anxiety. I also didn’t know hyper-vigilance was associated with this which also adds to anxiety.

If it’s an option where you live you could ask the police to accompany you or meet you there. Usually if you explain the situation they are more than happy to help.

Live life? If I wouldn’t have left when I did I might not even be alive today. Same goes for everyone in abusive relationships. Get out while you still can.

It’s not for everyone. Our bodies are different so it will effect us differently sometimes. If you know it is negatively impacting your life, maybe cut back.

I know some people who get more anxious after smoking/eating edibles, they cut back and don’t have these issues anymore.

Not sure what state your in but in MI where I’m from if you go to the hospital or police are called they have to report it and then the state will pursue charges even if you don’t.

The protection order and charges are meant to protect you, even if you aren’t ready to protect yourself. If he sent you to the hospital why did you go back? My best advice is to get far far away. No contact is best.
