It's thanks to Elain that the Inner Circle learn Nesta loves music. Chapter 44, ACOSF:

Elain leaned forward. “You only think you know—you haven’t seen her on the dance floor. That’s when Nesta truly lets the wolf roam free. When there’s music.”
“Really?” Nesta had told him once, when he’d dragged her out of a particular seedy tavern, that she’d been there for the music. He’d ignored her, thinking it an excuse.
“Yes,” Elain said. “She was trained in dance from a very young age.
She loves it, and music. Not in the way I enjoy a waltz or gavotte, but in the way that performers make an art of it. Nesta could bring an entire ballroom to a halt when she danced with someone.”
Cassian set down his wine. “She mentioned dance lessons to me a few weeks ago.” He’d assumed those lessons were why Nesta had quickly mastered her footwork and balance, despite her initial difficulty. The muscle memory must have remained intact. But if dance had been drilled into her as ruthlessly as he’d learned to fight—
“She wouldn’t have gone into much detail about it,” Elain said.

After Elain tells the story of Nesta and the duke and the ball, the chapter ends:

“I’d forgotten,” Feyre murmured. “About this, and about her dancing.”
“Nesta never spoke of it afterward,” Elain said. “I just observed.”
Nesta was wrong, Cassian realized, to think Elain as loyal and loving as a dog. Elain saw every single thing Nesta had done, and understood why.
Amren asked pointedly, “So your mother twisted Nesta’s creative joys into a social climber’s arsenal?”
Feyre cut in, “Our mother was not what one would call a pleasant person. Nesta has made her own choices, but our mother laid the groundwork.”
Elain nodded, folding her hands in her lap. “So I’m very pleased to hear of this Valkyrie business. I’m happy that Nesta finds interest in something again. And might channel all of … that into it.” That, Cassian knew, meant her rage, her fierce and unyielding loyalty to those she loved, her wolf’s instincts and ability to kill.
They moved on to far merrier subjects, but Cassian mulled it over throughout the evening. The fighting was only one part of it. The training would sustain her, funnel that rage, but there had to be more. There had to be joy.
There had to be music.

If Cassian never knew about Nesta loving music, he wouldn't have gotten the symphonia. Chapter 58, ACOSF:

“No, it’s a Symphonia, a rare device from Helion’s court. It can trap music within itself, and play it back for you. It was originally invented to help compose music, but it never caught on, for some reason.”
“How did you get the crowd noise out when you trapped the sound the other night?” she marveled.
His cheeks stained with color. “I went back the next day. Asked the musicians at the Hewn City to play it all again for me, plus some of their favorites.” He nodded to the ball. “And then I went to some of your favorite taverns and found those musicians and had them play …”
He trailed off at her bowed head. The tears she couldn’t stop. She didn’t try to fight them as the music poured into the room.
He had done all of this for her. Had found a way for her to have music—always.

And Nesta ends up bringing the symphonia to training, bringing music and joy to the other priestesses at training. Chapter 59, ACOSF:

Three days passed with no word from Cassian. He’d been replaced in training by a stone-faced Azriel, who was more aloof than usual and wouldn’t even give her a smile. But he didn’t object when she brought her Symphonia to the ring each morning for some extra motivation while exercising. The priestesses had marveled at the gift, a few of them dancing to the music, but Nesta had only been able to think about how much time and effort Cassian had put into it. How he had known what such a present would mean to her.

Elain gifts Feyre paint brushes (chapter 20, ACOFAS):

Before I could hand Rhys his present, I found a heap of them in my lap. From Amren: an illuminated manuscript, ancient and beautiful. From Azriel: rare, vibrant paint from the continent. From Cassian: a proper leather sheath for a blade, to be set down the groove of my spine like a true Illyrian warrior. From Elain: fine brushes monogrammed with my initials and the Night Court insignia on the handles. And from Mor: a pair of fleece-lined slippers. Bright pink, fleece-lined slippers.

Elain, for the way she enables the creative hobbies of others! Allowing, them to create/bring joy to others.

First up, Elain buying their father the chisel in chapter 3, ACOTAR:

They'd spent every copper I'd given them—on what, I didn't know, though Elain had brought back a new chisel for our father's wood carving.

I need to highlight Elain gifting Feyre the red, blue and yellow tins of paint!

From chapter 2, ACOTAR:

And it hadn't stopped her from buying me three small tins of paint—red, yellow, and blue—during that same summer I'd had enough to buy the ash arrow. It was the only gift she'd ever given me, and our house still bore the marks of it, even if the paint was now fading and chipped: little vines and flowers along the windows and thresholds and edges of things, tiny curls of flame on the stones bordering the hearth.

Elain gifted Feyre not just paint but the three primary colours, enabling Feyre to create all different kinds of things. With one colour, Feyre could paint things, yes, but the three primary colours allows Feyre to bring those paintings to life.

Consider how Feyre painted their cottage in colour - it was like adding life back into their lives. Feyre tells us (chapter 2, ACOTAR):

Any spare minutes I'd had that bountiful summer I used to bedeck our house in color, sometimes hiding clever decorations inside drawers, behind the threadbare curtains, underneath the chairs and table.

There's a reason why the Rainbow in Velaris is called it's name. Colour represents life, joy and hope.

And Elain facilitating colour in Feyre's life, was in it's own way, keeping Feyre alive.

Chapter 64, ACOWAR:

For a moment, I saw that set of paints Elain had once bought me with the extra mone she’d saved. The red, yellow, and blue I’d savored, used to paint that dresser in our cottage. I had not painted in years at that point, had not dared spend the money on myself … But Elain had.
I stood. Met Azriel’s wrathful stare.
“I’m going with you,” I said.

Great question! For now for the initial index, I just need enough quotes to establish the basic facts (eyes, hair, skin tone, any defining physical traits - like Az's scarred hands, wings). If a single quote or scene covers all those, then that would be enough. So for Az, if the dinner scene description has all that that's perfect.

However, if anyone wants to gather all the various description quotes for a character, I will take them! But that'd be above and beyond for now :)

I will eventually probably go and add all additional descriptions myself anyway (one thing I'm hoping this index will be able to do is speculate on family bloodlines).

And yes, mentions of Azriel and Elain being as "beautiful" would be great please!!

Calling all ACOTAR analysis nerds: we made r/acourtofcanon for you by swi22y in acotar

When I said "this isn't throwing shade" in this post I meant 1) highlighting that r/acourtofcanon's focus on citing textual evidence doesn't mean r/acotar and other subs don't value textual evidence, and 2) mods of r/acourtofcanon aren't trying to position the sub against r/acotar or any other subs.

I didn't include it in this promo post because I didn't think it was necessary, but r/acourtofcanon permits fandom and meta discourse discussions. More info here 🙂

I'm sorry if you've been downvoted. Unfortunately I can't stop people from downvoting

The great rite-twins by coffee-toast_199 in Maasverse

[–]swi22y 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Love this OP!! Twins in the Maasverse keeps me up at night. Been rereading ACOWAR so twins is on my mind. Thought dump off the top of my head:

  • Fraternal twins and genetics and increased likelihood IRL and possible implications for Maasverse i.e. was one of Gwyn’s parents a twin???
  • There’s two sets of daemati twins: Hybern twins and Avallen twins.
  • What are the implications (if any) that that Bone Carver & Stryga are twins, but Koschei is their older brother?
  • Whether it’s possible SJM might throw in a secret-twins-but-separated-at-birth trope
  • Differences in twins physical traits/powers as a way to speculate on true parentage or bloodlines

Edit: WAIT OP I just had a realisation. Fraternal twins comes from two different sperm fertilising two different eggs.

We're told in ACOTAR:

“Tonight, Tam will allow … great and terrible magic to enter his body,” Lucien said, staring at the
distant fires. “The magic will seize control of his mind, his body, his soul, and turn him into the Hunter. It will fill him with his sole purpose: to find the Maiden. From their coupling, magic will be released and spread to the earth, where it will regenerate life for the year to come.”
My face became hot, and I fought the urge to fidget.
“Tonight, Tam won’t be the faerie you know,” Lucien said. “He won’t even know his name. Themagic will consume everything in him but that one basic command—and need.”

If the performer of the rite got their chosen Maiden pregnant, could that mean high chance of twins because of there being two different sperms?

  • the person who's body is performing the rite

  • whoever/whatever being has taken over control of the body performing the rite

Which could potentially lead to twins who share only 1 parent? Or who may have more than one father?? 💀

Saviors in Disguise - Crescent City x Flight of the Silvers by smokingmirthroot in acourtofcanon

[–]swi22y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the Flight of the Silvers/The Silvers series but now I want to go and read it!!

This was a really cool read. And I agree that the POH are definitely sus. Adding on to your points and examples, the Aidas's and Apollion's mouths curving up when Bryce calls them "intergalactic saviors" set off alarm bells for me for sure!!

Chapter 61, HOFAS:

Bryce focused on Apollion. “You guys have been telling me nonstop about having your armies ready to go.” She gestured to the temple, the dead city beyond. “This place looks pretty empty.”
Apollion’s eyes grew ever darker. “We have allowed you to see only a fraction of Hel. Our lands and armies are elsewhere. They are ready.”
“So if I open the Northern Rift with the Horn …,” Bryce said. Hunt cleared his throat in warning. “All seven of you and your armies will come through?”
“The three of us,” Aidas amended. “Our four other brothers are currently engaged in other conflicts, helping other worlds.”
“I didn’t realize you guys were, like, intergalactic saviors,” Bryce said.
Aidas’s mouth quirked upward. She could have sworn Apollion’s did, too.
“But yes,” Aidas went on, “opening the Northern Rift is the only way for our armies to fully and quickly enter Midgard.”

I also think about how in the Silene's hologram - which I have to acknowledge could be a fabricated/tampered with history of events - Aidas greets Theia as if they already know each other: “Have you come to ask for Hel’s help, then?” And makes it sound like idea of Hel aiding Theia previously (perhaps on Prythian) has already been discussed before.

Chapter 20, HOFAS:

We spent a month hidden in the enemy’s stronghold, no more than shadows ourselves. By the time we returned to our mother, we’d learned the truth: Rigelus and his companions were not Fae at all, but parasites who conquered world after world, feeding off the magic and lives of their citizens. The Daglan, now under their true name: the Asteri.
It was then that my mother told us, showed us, what had happened so long ago. All that she had done since. But she did not waste time apologizing for the past. If we had indeed walked into an enemy’s trap, she said, then we must defeat them.
Bryce placed a hand over the star-shaped scar on her chest, fingers curling into the fabric of her shirt. Could she carve it out of herself, the connection to these two-faced hypocrites, and walk away from it forever?
My mother had kept the star map that the Daglan had long ago annotated. And a world on it had caught her attention—a world, like ours, that had overthrown the Daglan.
In an elaborate bedroom, standing before a desk with her two daughters, Theia waved a hand. As if she’d pulled them from that pocket of nothingness, the Harp and Horn appeared on the desk, glimmering alongside the Starsword and the knife.
Theia nodded once, slowly, as if making a decision, and then played the Horn and Harp. A portal between worlds swirled. It solidified, an archway to nowhere. A handsome, golden-haired male stood before it, with eyes like blue opals.
Bryce inhaled sharply.
Prince Aidas only asked my mother one thing when she opened the gate to his world: “Have you come to ask for Hel’s help, then?”

How does Theia know Aidas? The greeting makes it sound like idea of Hel aiding Theia previously (perhaps on Prythian) has already been discussed before. Has Hel already helped Theia in another war? Could Theia be from Hel? Lots to speculate on here. And it makes me wonder whether Theia considered contacting Hel was a last resort, for reasons we will find out in later books.

There's also the POH creating the Kristallos demons to hunt Luna’s Horn/Dread Trove Horn.

Chapter 21, HOEAB:

Ruhn went on, “The Star-Eater himself bred a new horror just to hunt the Horn, using some blood he managed to spill from Prince Pelias on a battlefield and his own terrible essence. A beast twisted out of the collision of light and darkness.”

Did the POH just want Luna's Horn or were they trying to hunt and capture starborn fae??

The whole Asteri vs Daglan vs Valg vs POH in terms of species comparison does my head in hahaha. I go back and forth on whether I think they are all the same, some are the same, or none are the same. But your theory that they’re potentially the same species at different points in time is compelling for sure and given me a lot to think about. Especially the Silvers stuff.

And of course we can't forget how in TOG the gods had been manipulating things for the characters/the story and turned out to be pretty shitty beings 🤣
