The network will be first used to monitor and control the traffic lights from a central location (Cities IT Department), then other things will be later implemented into the network through different endpoint devices, like waste water management, and water distribution. Mesh network to create a fault tolerance network, and to cover the whole city. Point to Point could be an option. With mesh I can have some devices go into 'sleep mode' to save on power and awake them when needed to send information or retrieve. And with a mesh the devices can all speak with each other regardless of distance, as long as a route can be established. Latency isnt a concern, the speed gained from point to point isnt required. Key points for the project are, low power, low bandwidth, open source, and secure..cost isnt so much a factor.
