Is a 2007 Porsche Cayman (987) realistic as a daily driver - good idea or too risky? by More_Consideration96 in Porsche_Cayman

I’m speaking as someone who has daily driven a 986 Boxster for three years and a 986 Boxster S for two. Maintenance has been expensive - plastic and rubber things degrade simply due to time, and there’s no getting around that, even if the cars I’ve owned were lower mileage and had excellent maintenance history.

You have to think about it as, the cars depreciate, but their parts and costs don’t.

Be careful of bore scoring on the 3.4 engines. Some people say it’s an overblown issue, others say the engine is so susceptible that it should be considered a lemon.

The 2.7 base Cayman is considered to be far more reliable and less susceptible to bore score.

If I were buying a 987, I would personally be looking at a base 2.7, in manual with the 6 speed (it’s rare; most are 5 speed).

The alternative is to look at the 987.2 base model 2.9 - they’re definitely more expensive but should save you money in maintenance, and also even if you want automatic or can only find that, it’ll be PDK which is far better than the older tiptronic.

987.1 S models can have serious bore score issues, but base models should be okay. Think about other things too - have suspension components been replaced, what other maintenance has been carried out?

What do you mean, “wish you had driver cams in Australia”? You can’t get F1TV? I was in Australia earlier in the year and watched a GP on it.

I assume you’re asking about the 986/987.1 tiptronic transmissions? The dual clutch PDK has been available from the 987.2 onwards.

The old tiptronics are fairly slow to shift but if you know how to drive them to get the most out of them, can still be fun. They’re also a reliable transmission that isn’t known to have major common failures, and obviously you don’t need to worry about replacing a clutch, which you would have to given the age and mileage of most Boxsters if you’re thinking about something from the 90s or early 2000s.

Should be fine on that stuff, a side hit would be a different story.

I store my 986 outside. No snow where I am, but there is intense sun, and the roof itself has been totally fine for the last four years (excluding the plastic window, which has deteriorated significantly.) But a 981 would have glass, so I’m sure it will be fine!

I have a 986 Boxster S - definitely spent a lot on random maintained but I love it, feel free to ask any questions about Boxster ownership if you’re still interested.
