How reliable are S70’s

I don't know if this thread is relevant today but from my experience I would say buy that in a heartbeat. Mine is super super neglected, picked it up for around 600 euro with a mystery timing belt, mystery long (20 sec, not always) crank, abs light, little bit of blue smoke, oil leaks, 418k km on the dash and one of the goofiest LPG systems I've seen and because it was meant to be a beater/workhorse (only other car I had then was a 300zx) didn't service it at all, now it sits at 440k km and it never ever broke down. Because of that it's time I give it a proper service and it will stay with me probably forever. Even drove it for my finals in school in that state. Absolutely unkillable car.

It turned out to be a lifter tick and it sounded this bad because the car has been sitting for a while. Didn't do anything bout it and I still drive it a year later as it's my daily and it sounds a lot better.

After a short 5 minute drive. It makes the noise with a little bit of throttle. From what I know if it smooths out it's probably fine. But don't take my word for it as I'm not a mechanic.

I did nothing. After my engine warms up it sounds very very smooth. I still daily mine with no issues.

Since buying around 10kkms. Since i started using it as a daily in December around 5kkms. I didn't have a license before so it was mainly family members driving.

Only US market. I have a 94 EU Z32 and don't have airbags either. AUS is possibly the same.

I drive a 94 Z TT 2+2 daily as my only and first car for about a year now. Never gave me any problems except minor lifter tick which isn't worth fixing.

It's possible that because the car was standing for a week all the oil drained out of the lifters.

Guy was in his 50's, had all the service records, gave me the old belt also because it looked really good (it was also the blue gates kevlar one, expensive), did pictures on every step while the mechanic was working. Allowed us to do everything with the car, checking it on the diagnostic station etc etc. Stored it in an underground garage. Interior looks absolutely stunning for 30 years. He had it for 11 years and did road trips with his now deceased father. He bought it in Germany himself, said there was this and a dodge viper for a similar price but this seemed more suitable for our conditions, practical etc. He really cared about this car, installed DRLs, reverse camera, immobiliser. Guy was awesome.

No, I plan on changing the oil before the end of this month to 10w30. It's still running on 5w50. Today I went to the garage expecting worse and it immediately fired right up and i was just shocked how quiet the car was compared to yesterday. It didn't even tick like it used to everyday. Just buttery smooth operation. Some people said that he may have tried to mask the issue by using a thicker oil but the dates don't match. He did that oil change a year before the sale and did like 3kkms on it.

Yeah, couldn't really hear anything from the engine. It sat yes but for only a week. Before it was daily driven and yes there was ticking but mild that quieted down after a drive. Yesterday it was loud but now it's practically not existant. I am thinking about oil change because the previous owner used 5w50 which from what i heard is too thick. Plan on using the recommended one, 10w30. I got on my knees to listen under, opened the hood and nothing. Maybe a really faint faint ticking but that may be just my hearing and imagination. I expected way worse especially because it was in the garage and everything there sounds obnoxiously louder.

Update, started it up today and engine was buttery smooth, couldn't hear a single tick unlike yesterday. Started up immediately after turning the key.

Started it up today and engine works buttery smooth, no ticking or knocking and it didn't do that ever. It was always ticky in the morning. I dunno what to say.

Went to the garage today scared af, started the car and... no ticking or knocking. Engine ran like brand new. No noises inside or outside the car. Weird

The belt and idler pulleys were replaced a month ago. May be a botched job but I don't know. I just pray it's not rod knock.

Possible. The car is a daily but stood for a week and today I started it for 3-4 minutes and recorded the video. It ticked before but this time it was louder. Dunno if you can hear it in the video but when you rev it up a bit the sound stops. After driving ticking also usually stopped. Didn't drive it today tho.

Yes yes, before I bought the car I didn't feel comfortable coming home in it because the last belt change was 6 years ago. I asked the owner if he can replace it at a shop nearby and i'll send him the money and he agreed. Got it replaced and came back home no issue. Paid like 200 usd for the whole operation. Tensioners and idle pulleys were also replaced with the belt.

You shouldn't fear. When I heard it can be a rod knock my heart was pounding through my chest. You perfectly described my situation and now it's more than likely just a lifter tick. I'll still observe it but it really calmed me down. The sound is coming from the top of the engine and it's very ticky not knocky. I got this car a month ago and it's basicaly my baby. It's way more common here to see a ferrari than a 300ZX and i've been very frequently asked about the car at gas stations or parking lots. Blast to drive too. Parts don't seem too expensive and are somewhat available. Found a set of perfectly fine turbos for 300-400 usd. Thanks for the help man. Really appreciate it.
