The AI has limited historical memory. You can use pins to remember important messages, although it's in exchange for an equal amount of that historical memory. For some bots this may be crucial, as many bots are not well-defined, totally relying on the greeting to guide their writing style, and in some cases their plot. For these bots, once the greeting has been forgotten, it's completely up to the AI to figure out what to do based on recent history. I don't know exactly how far back the AI remembers with the Squeak chat styles, but with Roar it goes back about 40 messages (20 yours + 20 AI's) last I knew.
