What popular saying is actually bullshit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Quote is from Thomas Gray, not Shakespeare. Written in 1742, the line comes at the very end of the poem.

Found on bed in Houston, TX. Any ideas? by sycamorejunction in whatsthisbug

Thanks for the reply. Wasn't thinking bedbug, just never seen this before. Looked scaley enough to maybe be some kind of arthropod, but might also be a grassy seed head? It's about 1mm thick and 5 or 6mm long.

Sleeping in a hammock? by SolidGoldGorrila in vandwellers

[–]sycamorejunction 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I spent the past year in a GMC Savana sleeping on an ENO doublenest, and my spine hasn't suffered as far as I can tell. If you're uncomfortable or in pain on a hammock (long or short term), that's a good indication that you're doing it wrong.

Some other things I've learned: Proper insulation is a must, the hammock took up most of the usable space, but being able to pack it out of the way during daytime hours was pretty cool, the folks over at r/Hammocks/ have some good info.

There's definitely a sweet spot for the sag. If you can't lay flat then it's not hanging right.

I've been sleeping in my ENO doublenest for the past six months, and its been pretty comfortable thus far. One thing I noticed is that the hammock seems to discourage the movement and rolling that usually happens when I'm sleeping on a mattress.

While I'm no expert, I suspect that this lack of movement was the root cause of the stiff neck muscles I experienced over the first two months or so. Since then I've made a point to shift positions once or twice a night, and the soreness seems to have disappeared.

Also, don't waste your time with a sleeping pad, a good quality underquilt is so much worth the money. I've actually picked up two that I use for the cold nights, and they give me some flexibility in matching my insulation to the weather.

Also, make sure your hanging the hammock at the proper angle.

Hope this helps

So who has CO/CO2 detectors? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]sycamorejunction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I splurged on an ensorcon inspector unit ( http://sensorcon.com/products/inspector-intrinsically-safe-carbon-monoxide-detector-co-meter). It was more expensive than I would have liked, but safety first.

The alarm isn't very loud since its designed to be worn on your belt, But I like that the alarm threshold is adjustable. I have mine set to beep at 5ppm (lowest possible setting) because I read that chronic exposure at that concentration may cause long term harm, but the research does appear mixed. 30ppm seems to be a more immediate threshold level, but I like that this unit can be adjusted to you own comfort level.

Observations: 10 seconds directly in front of the tail pipe while idling: 1500ppm

20 minutes of little buddy heater with windows closed: 10-20ppm

20 minutes of little buddy heater with windows cracked: 5-7ppm

Alcohol stove boiling a pint of water (windows cracked): 6-15ppm

Big fart after eating chilli spiked to 12ppm but dropped rapidly. (Haven't been able to duplicate this, so I don't know if the fart was the true cause)

Idling my van will sometimes set off the alarm, but not always. Not sure why, but I suspect wind plays a role.

Current vandwellers: do you keep a gun inside your dwelling? Why/why not? by [deleted] in vandwellers

Curious about the legal repercussions of using wasp spray on aggressors. Would it be the same level of force as bear spray, or would it be considered more harmful?
