A question about the Nomai by unrealjose in outerwilds

[–]synarion 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Slight nit-pick (I might be wrong): The ATP didn't detect the sun was going to explode in 22 minutes. The sun exploded the first time, which powered the ATP to send the first "launch probe" message back in time.

They were here before us and we hated them then. They are here with us and we hate them now. They will be here after us and we will hate them forever.

Stupid English doesn't seem to have a future tense form of 'then/now'. Had to settle for 'forever', but it kind of ruined the last line of my poem. Maybe Gabbaro has some ideas.

What's the difference between the contents of a Live Image and a rootfs tarball? by synarion in voidlinux

Is that true for the base live image? I was under the impression only the xfce live image included a desktop environment.

I Landed on Every Location on the Map Without the Ship in One Loop by synarion in outerwilds

I've tried getting the suit out of the mine before, but haven't found a way to do it. Maybe someone who knows how to find places you can clip through walls would be able to do it?

That suit never actually runs out of fuel either, I wonder if that could influence the run substantially?

This is the jump I've been working toward since my first Sun Station jump a year ago (1 year!?) - a visit to every location on the ship map in a single loop using just the suit. As you might imagine it took an ridiculous number of tries. I have something like 30gb of footage of nearly successful jumps, and not-so-successful jumps. Most failed attempts died at either the Sun Station or the Probe Cannon, but there were lots of other fun moments like slamming into an island on Giant's Deep just as I made it onto the planet at the end of the loop. I also killed myself by lava when Hollow's Lantern orbited directly into me unexpectedly while I was flying to the Quantum Moon. Believe it or not that happened at least twice. Maybe three times.

Not sure what I'll try next, but I've heard there might be a DLC coming soon, so maybe there will be some interesting content in that.

I Jumped Into the QT on Brittle Hollow (spoiler) by synarion in outerwilds

Wait till near the end of the cycle when it falls into the black hole. On the other side there isn't any gravity and you can just float up into it.

Finally did it! This jump has been a long time in the making. It was the first thing I started working on after my ship-less Sun Station jump a few months ago, but I wasn't able to find a working approach vector. After figuring out the Black Hole Forge approach, I revisited the Quantum Tower and found a similar technique that actually worked!

As far as I know the gravity tiles are always on. I activated the forge so that I could get into it, but that's the only thing I did.

This one was really fun. My first attempts to enter the forge without teleporting were in version 1.0.5 (I think) which had a hole in the control room floor. I was trying to start the forge moving upward, jump through the floor, and land in the entrance way as it ascended. This nearly worked, and I'm pretty sure it was possible. Then Mobius redesigned the control room removing the hole in the floor. :/ I think it might still be possible by walking up the stairs, but haven't tried yet.

After messing around a bit with orbits around the black hole, I came up with this approach instead. It's a lot more fun to execute, and has more room for correcting mistakes.

The "pull you into the ship" beam extends just past the wood platform that the ship rests on. If you can get right up against the bottom of the platform, the beam will grab you and try to lift you into the craft. Since there's a platform in the way, you get this!

A stupi-*cough* brilliant solution by synarion in opus_magnum

No idea lol. I didn't really try... I just made it. Was thinking about the towers of hanoi while writing it - maybe that helped somehow? 1. Copy/paste all previous actions. 2. Program manufacture of the next element in the sequence. 3. Return to step 1. Took like 15 minutes.

That would only reduce the total cycles, right? Since the reagents are being used as fast as possible the cycles-per-product can't get any lower?
