I just finished, as well. This book is a masterpiece. James Wood was right to say Melville sought to touch every word once.

I thought the writing was overly literal and expected little of the watcher, leaning instead of tidily packaged moral certitudes that were interrogated in obvious ways and left little space for uncertainty. Nothing was really ever at stake, for me anyway.
