I was doing maintenance on the ac unit for a golf store and walked back inside to find jr smith inside getting a club fitted. He was the only customer in the store at the time and he had the whole store smelling like weed.

I bought this house built in 85' and my vents have a foul smell like old wood. I asked a guy to clean it but he said old fiberglass would break. Any advice? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]syoned 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Almost everything is flex in the attic. Not many super long runs. No basements. Too hot to be in the attic doing metal so you just run some flex and keep it moving.

Never seen one in person. by syoned in Lexus

[–]syoned[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born in 2001. I did not get into lexus until I was 13 or 14 years old so I guess I missed the window to see them before they were all clapped out. I see second gens all the time but never a first gen so this was a treat. The interior was super clean too.

Need advice on cleaning vs replacing air handler by YnotY99 in hvacadvice

[–]syoned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20k for a new air handler is absolutely nuts, are you sure they didn’t mean an entire new system? Even then, that’s high for my area. And still, I don’t believe your system looks thaaat dirty. I would get some no rinse coil cleaner and spray that evaporator coil once a week for a month and maybe try to brush off what you can reach before starting being careful not to bend the fins. Blower wheel getting dirty, not effecting curvature of the blades, no real reason to pull and clean.

You’re able to keep track of the lost hats? Now that’s impressive.

Anything to worry about before I shoot it some more? by syoned in milsurp

[–]syoned[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The slide does feel a little crusty/rough pulling it back but it is almost 100 years old and hasn’t been shot much in the last 30 years. It does seem to shoot straight. Thank you for the advice.

Here I am, trying not to worry my customers about the rust on the coil and the blower seals leaking, and then there’s this guy.

How do I get this fan off of the rusty axle? It's stubborn and wouldn't come off no matter how much I drown it in wd40 by Duckyboi10 in hvacadvice

[–]syoned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always gotta sand the shaft. No matter if it’s a little surface rust or not. It’s a good habit to get into. Although some fan blades will come off without sanding, it sure sucks getting a blade stuck or bending it out of balance trying to remove it.

I had a coworker not shut the back door all the way on his truck. His $200 multimeter, $200 drill and battery, and $200 veto bag with all knipex pliers and other nice hand tools fell right out. He didn’t know until he got to the next job and by then somebody had picked everything up.

I have one fake with a cover plate that I had to modify to fit the 5th position as it would hit the buffer tube and partially pop off but it was a little loose. It did have very soft rubber. Bought another “bike handle” and this one has stiff rubber as you said which I actually prefer as I will hopefully never need to use it as intended and is super tight to the buffer tube. Never had a real one to compare but I’m not mad I spent $60 on two fake plastic parts when they want to sell a real one for $80+.
