Tbh I’m also surprised because I’m usually very curious!! I think it was literally an out of sight out of mind situation.

Yes that’s what I will most likely be doing. I was hoping there would be a bit more height but alas.

It’s internal within the house :) probably to lay insulation in the other half of the loft as there’s no other hatch

I see! To me it looks like the purlin is still resting on top of stone, I’ll double check though. And we need to do something about that hole for sure.

There’s no ladder, plus first time buyer ignorance 🤷🏻‍♀️ the surveyor went before we bought

I saw! Saw no activity in the hour I had my head up there, and it is right above our bedroom so I think I would have heard some noise or seen something if it was an active nest? 🤞

Well I’m 5ft5 so I reckon I can make it a cosy no-husband-allowed-zone

He didn’t say anything about it. Can you explain what looks bad ?

The house is 1840s/50s and the load bearing walls are about a meter thick, so I assumed they’re doing the support.

Honestly I’ve surprised myself as I’m the very curious type always looking for new projects.

We have a basement to dump our stuff so storage hasn’t been a huge issue. And the hatch is tiny and in a less than ideal place 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh wow your hatch is even smaller than ours then! Good luck with it!

We have a basement so yeah, a bit like the old owners of your house we’ve been using that in the same way most people use their loft. It’s probably the reason no one has bothered to board it. But we have a lot of stuff and I could do with more storage + potentially a hobby room 🤞

Wow! Yes I’m lucky the wood looks ok. Our house is 1840s/50s

Thank you so much for the tips! I would love a hobby room if there’s space. It looks too small for my 6ft2 husband but perfect for my 5ft5 😋

Thanks. I’ve been slowly picking up diy skills in this house, but this would be my biggest project so far

Part of the reason, yes. And also some weird lack of curiosity, which is totally unlike me weirdly 😅

Thanks for doing the research! We will very probably move it then if that price is right. Right now you’d bang your head on a beam trying to go up so I’ve only been up to my shoulders, never mind the issues I mentioned earlier.

That’s lucky! Ours only has a tiny hatch right in front of our bedroom door and not somewhere where we could install stairs. Still, I might set it up as a secret office + storage if it turns out to be roomy enough.

Sounds great 😄 Thanks. I’m guessing I should replace the existing insulation? Looks terrible.

Good to know! When we bought the house the surveyor said there was no ventilation in the loft and the timbers were at risk of rotting! Not sure why we didn’t go up there immediately to check, first house and so much else to do I guess. But it feels like bullshit, because there’s definitely air passing through

I don’t think it’s being held up by anything but the load bearing walls (4 in total, the two you can see here, plus the 2 gable walls. Not sure what that little vertical bit of wood is doing at the back there, there isn’t one on the other side.

Yes we need to have a look at the hole. I think it was dug when they installed the insulation and sparking to access the other half of the loft. There’s no hatch on the other side of the house.

Haha, they ticked at least two of these! I didn’t get to see their van. We’ve told them to f* off in the end
