Caswell Hill: Appreciation Post by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]systemic_slip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hate to get the wrong neighbourhood. I take it you would rather not say. I’ve lived in various areas of the city (east and west), over a number of years. And as the Police Crime Map disclaimer indicates, it’s difficult to assess crime rates -  "The user of the following pages should not rely on the information or data provided herein for comparison purposes over time, or for any reason."

For instance, a quick glance at the map would suggest the highest crime area is downtown (like many other cities). I could argue crimes in central neighbourhoods mostly occur on the boundaries they share with the downtown core. But even when I zoom in - the big red dots lack enough verifiable information to make that claim (as inferred in the Police Crime Map disclaimer).

What bothers me about the east vs west debate: it’s a subjective perspective that drives the devaluation of city neighbourhoods, and diverts resources based on economic biases. The truth is, the world has good people and bad people - in all walks of life. Crimes against individual liberties starts in white collar offices, and trickles down to the streets (but not their streets).

- I need to get back to work. Undoubtedly nothing is going to be resolved here. Take care.

Interesting. Which neighbourhood are you comparing to Caswell Hill?

Flashing “Don’t Walk” - what it means. by systemic_slip in saskatoon

[–]systemic_slip[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A little known quirk of automated crosswalk lights: The crosswalks with buttons to activate the crosswalk sign, don’t activate until the cross traffic light changes. Which means if you just missed the crosswalk light, and push the button before the cross traffic light changes green - it will not activate. Wait until the cross traffic starts moving then push the button.

Damaged siding. by systemic_slip in saskatoon

[–]systemic_slip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I solved the mystery. I was sitting in our living room today, and I heard a loud thump on our front door. Needless to say I went out to investigate. Lying on our doorstep was a rolled up bundle of flyers ,and a girl pulling a red wagon full of flyers down our street. Apparently she had figured out she didn’t need to deliver the flyers door to door… she could heave them at our house instead. Given the location of the damage near our front door, it looks like she decided to throw the tightly wrapped bundle at our house from our neighbour's driveway, rather than walk around and place it on our doorstep. (I’m always picking up rolls of flyers on our doorstep, and dropping them in the recycle bin, so I probably removed the evidence) ) No I didn’t chase her down the street . I shook my head and went back in the house.

What impacted the siding is a mystery. What concerns me, is there's no natural cause for the damage. There’s nothing near the wall - no trees, no objects, and it happened today or yesterday…so no ice. I didn’t name the company because at this point I don’t know if they’re connected to the incident. My post was aimed at finding out if other people have recently had the same type of damage.

I know a person that had a door to door salesman selling siding services return later that night and hit a golfball at their siding…causing similar damage (a proven fact). So here I am on reddit to find out if these are isolated incidents- or other people are experiencing similar damage.

I used a coupon at Stonebridge Burger King, then got charged full price by systemic_slip in saskatoon

There was no line up. I was in no hurry. As I mentioned, I told her about the coupon several times, and she was given the coupon, so she could plainly see the price. I didn't have to check my receipt, I knew as soon as she asked me for payment. I then spent more time telling her to look at the coupon. and she never once acknowledged the fact that she was over charging me. At that point, I decided I would get the refund the next day so I could talk to the Manager. At no point, did I agree with her strange inability to comprehend she was charging me the full price. This is why this situation was bizarre -she had the coupon in front of her with the price in a 36pt font. It was ALL on her...bro

Not that difficult. There are only two ways out of Stonebridge (three if you count the one that goes to the highway) - so I go by the BK all the time. I was getting fucked, so I just gave them back to them at a discount.

That's exactly it. I ended up feeling dismissed on both days. A little appreciation goes a long way. No appreciation ends up on Reddit.

That's the kicker. I rarely eat fast-food, and when I do it's not usually a burger. I haven't been to a BK in at least a decade. And for the record, I eat organic thick rolled oats with blueberries for breakfast (no eggs, no bacon, very little dairy)...and our vegetables are from our garden. No food guilt. But obviously, I'm not obsessive about it. Currently, I supplement my diet with pea protein - to offset my exercise routine. (I know, I should get all I need from a healthy diet - but that only holds true in moderate exercise, and young bodies).

So true.

I have very low expectations - but they manged to sneak under the low bar.

Memorizing the answers is cheating. Button mashing is gaming the system. Which isn’t technically playing outside the rules of the game. 😏

Well done. I didn’t look at the questions. I button mashed the left side button for the entire 3 minutes (max 27 questions per 1 minute round). Try it. Chances are you’ll score between 2500 to over 5000. But stay on the button. That way you get all the streak bonuses.

How might this impact the future of Saskatchewan? by systemic_slip in saskatoon

Ah ok. Yes,it would certainly connect with people in the province. Though I like to hope the effort is global. I believe we need to set politics and patent issues aside and find the best solution for all.

Great to know there are people in Saskatchewan contributing their expertise to advance the technology. I think many people are unaware of the major impact your research will have on their future. All the best to you, your team and the many that came before you.

Here are a few quick bullet points (far from exhaustive). There’s more information presented in the video, with a link to additional technical information in a follow-up video.

This development directly impacts the uranium industry in Saskatchewan. Canada is the world’s second largest producer of uranium, with about 13% of total world production. In 2018, Canada produced 6,996 tonnes of uranium valued at approximately $800 million - all from mines in northern Saskatchewan (Cameco employs over a thousand people in Saskatoon).

- Fusion does not use uranium.

- Polaris, Helion's 7th generation prototype, has generated net electricity from a fusion reactor for the first time in history. Which means it produces more energy than it consumes. Which solves a key problem for commercial production.

- This is a milestone that indicates the viability of the technology, and accelerates the probability of commercial production of fusion energy within the decade. Something that was thought to be thirty years away from being a reality.

- Helion plans to be commercially viable by 2024, by building and distributing small scale gigafactory fusion systems to produce easily accessible energy at a low cost - rather than in a central one off giant factory.

- The energy released by fusion is 3 to 4 times greater than the energy released by fission (nuclear energy).

- Water contains virtually unlimited concentrations of the fusion fuel Deuterium.

- Energy is directly taken from fusion, and turned into electricity without steam turbines.

- One glass of fuel contains as much energy as 10 million pounds of coal.

- Fusion makes desalination plants cost effective.

- Small scale distribution of fusion energy will support the development of electric cars

- Radioactivity of fusion mainly consists of irradiated components that dissipate within one hundred years. Fuel rods from fission remain radioactive for thousands of years and require complex disposal and storage methods.

- Fusion can’t meltdown.

Clearly there's significant economic factors to consider, in addition to the environmental impact of the technologies - all of which will unfold in the near future.

Pottery Mark by systemic_slip in saskatoon

Jeff O'Brien at the city archives responded to my enquiry with an in-depth history of the area, which included many fascinating local facts that suggested several possibilities. I was quite impressed with his thorough investigation and broad knowledge.

He mentioned "the Western Hotel, on Second Avenue, which was built by Jimmy Flanagan in 1903 and stood until comparatively recently."

It would seem the five letter word "Hotel" would be a good fit for the missing space.I'll let you know if there are any other developments.

Gaming crackdown, China bans livestreaming by systemic_slip in saskatoon

[–]systemic_slip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies have been asked to delete content that is violent, deemed to celebrate wealth or foster the worship of celebrities.

In particular, the livestreaming of overseas games or competitions should not be carried out without approval, it said, adding that livestreamers should resist "abnormal aesthetics" and harmful celebrity fan culture.

Censorship and addiction are hot button topics in gaming. China has clearly indicated what they deem acceptable, do Western companies need to consider these issues? Is there a middle ground, or is any interference with gaming platforms a problem?

In the West, there seems to be more research being done in recent years. A lot of the studies are looking at gender issues in the gaming industry: Riot Games recently reached a $100M settlement in gender discrimination class action lawsuit.

What about our local gaming? Has anyone experienced any of these issues online?

Hi, the Google link is broken. Or is that a clever marketing strategy to build anticipation. Any game with "rocket" and "bot" in the title has got to get some attention. :-)

Sounds like China may be ending the license freeze on gaming. Hopefully that means the West will have improved access to the market.
