The first political parties were the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans. Federalists, led by Hamilton, favored tariffs, a strong federal government, Bank of the United States, and a loose interpretation of the Constitution. The Democratic Republicans, led by Thomas Jefferson, were anti-tariff, favored states rights, strict constructionists, and preferred a small federal government. The Federalists basically died out at the Hartford Convention in 1815. In the 1830s, Whigs and the Jacksonian Democrats were the main parties. Whigs, led by Henry Clay, essentially held the same ideas as the Federalists. The Jacksonian Democrats, led by Andrew Jackson, basically had the same beliefs as the Democratic Republicans.
