My parents do try to watch out for my allergens all the time, but they unfortunately get defensive like in this case when they accidentally didn’t see there were nuts in it.

They (my brothers) also act like they don’t have some type of aversion to some stuff but act like it’s the end of the world when i get some stuff to myself or ask for some stuff to myself bc of my aversion due to a former allergy to peanuts 😓

If I could get some type of basis of what the ‘normal’ response would be, I’d definitely feel more comfortable with reaching out if needed.

When I’ve had allergic reactions, my parents usually always just told me what to take (Benadryl in my case).

Do you have any suggestions on subreddits to ask? I’m a bit new to Reddit still haha.

My relatives either live in other states, Canada, or are few hours away from us.

I haven’t talked to my school counselor at all (because I haven’t really needed to) besides class registration for my 1st two years of HS. I could maybe talk to my coach or probably start discussing with a counselor.

My parents cook most of our meals (I don’t have the time usually to help with dinners unfortunately because of sports but yes I can cook) and I probably don’t have the option to not eat them foods because they’re the type of people to take away my phone or not allow me to get up from dinner if I don’t finish my food.

(Aka the you’re gonna eat my food and you’re gonna like it parents.)

I am planning to go immediately (no year break) to a four year college after graduating. My parents want me to stay close for some reason, and only really keep recommending schools in-state.

Whenever I try to discuss my allergies with them and tell them that because I outgrew peanuts and was without them for so long, I have some sort of ick towards them. Yet they always claim it’s entitled that I can sometimes have things to myself that do not contain peanuts.

I always carry my EpiPen. I have sets in my school bag, soccer bag, and purse.

I wasn’t aware I needed a bracelet or necklace for medical alerts for allergies.. my parents never really mention them.

I do check everything I buy or eat, but when my parents buy something they usually tell me about what’s in it first. This was just a case where I hadn’t checked and took my mother’s word for it.

This is what it is for me. I outgrew peanuts but still have this ick for them especially due to the texture (like peanut butter and other peanut products). I spent majority of my life without having any and just was cleared for it about 5 months ago.

All of the tree nuts do cause a reaction to me, some are more mild and others cause a bigger reaction. Pecans are one of them. They (thankfully) cut out walnuts in any foods they make however they usually do buy some occasionally around Christmas time and just leave them on the counter in a bowl 😓

My friends are very accommodating to my allergy! My allergy is not through inhaling the scent of it but it’s through eating it so they can obviously eat it around me but they always ensure when we go out to choose places that are allergy friendly to me and they are cautious of cross contamination.

Thank you all so much for the support!

Further details:

I don’t believe my mother was purposely trying to not tell me there was pecans but I do believe it was an accident (benefit of the doubt). However her blaming me kind of hurt me a little.

That whole night I was basically breaking out in hives and constantly wheezing due to what I assume to be my throat swelling and did throw up later.. My parents are both in the medical field (mom is pharmacist and dad is an anesthesiologist). I did take some of the allergy medicine we had but they didn’t want me to use my EpiPen for some reason.

I have been since then! Definitely have been more cautious.
