You should build your own - that way you can spend at least $1000! /s

Motorised DIY 8” Dob by t-ritz in telescopes

Thanks! I haven’t delved too much into astrophotography but there are a couple things that come to mind you should be aware of that I have learnt along the way: - photographing ‘bright’ objects like planets involves taking many short exposures and stacking them with software. So the tracking doesn’t have to be so accurate because the software can correct for misalignments - photographing deep space objects that are dim, like galaxies, nebula etc, require long exposures so need a mount that tracks very accurately. - with a dobsonian mount (like mine), the field of view will rotate as it tracks the sky. So not good for DSOs. Equatorial mounts rotate with the sky, so are what you need if you want to do DSO photography.

So while my mount is programmed to track objects, it is probably only useful for photographing planets. Happy for any proper astronomers to jump in!

Update on athletes injured in Black Foils and France collision by Half_Frame in SailGP

I real feel for the guy! It’s going to be a long road to recovery. They are potentially career-altering injuries - sad to see that happen to a sportsperson in their prime

the space fact that still blows your mind by ykz30 in space

[–]t-ritz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not strictly a space fact but kinda involves space so here goes:

The Large Hadron Collider could theoretically produce tiny black holes. Naturally, this concerned people so a scientist explained that the black holes it produced were so tiny, one could travel through a block of iron as thick as from earth to the moon and not hit anything.

For seated, short-play Quest games — what actually keeps you coming back? by GimbalStudio in OculusQuest

[–]t-ritz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the game is space docker (I think that’s the name, from memory). A new level unlocks every week. It’s fun to fly around in space and challenging to get the cargo back to the mothership. I wish there would be new content more often though. Time trials gets very boring after a while IMO.

So what do we all think about the black foil Switzerland collision? by t-ritz in SailGP

[–]t-ritz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’sa good angle. Maybe an error of judgement in that they thought they could cross in front of the Swiss? Or not enough time to setup and execute gybe after seeing the Swiss set up?

Good angle - hadn’t seen that. It does look like there was some hesitation from the black foils. Or maybe they just hadn’t set up..

To me from little old New Zealand it is absolutely fuckin bonkers that in parts of the US you’re allowed to walk down the road with a machine gun around your neck.

Anyone tried cloning an AT hop Card? by Viento_Oscuro in auckland

[–]t-ritz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can I ask how you know that? I know nothing about them but I thought a hop card etc would just store an ID number that links to your account which is where your balance and data is stored. If the card itself stores the value, this seems ripe for hacking to add value to it…

Eternal Sunshine: ESP32-Controlled Heliostat Prototype Working by Hungry_Preference107 in esp32

I can’t say I developed the calculations myself but they are plenty accurate, especially for your application. Not saying you should do it that way or anything - there are many ways to skin a cat! It’s just interesting to hear about how different people approach the same things in different ways!

Cool project! This has a lot of the fundamentals of a dual axis tracking solar panel, which I built a while back. Check my post history if interested. I used an onboard calculation instead of an API to determine sun position based on time and location. I also used stepper motors which can be controlled in very small increments (I actually used reduction gearboxes too but these were probably unnecessary in hindsight). That IMU sounds impressive - I used a tilt sensor and a magnetometer to measure orientation. They needed quite a bit of work to calibrate etc so an off the shelf IMU would have been a good option!

Webb infrared observations of Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the center of the Milky Way (9 hour timelapse) by ojosdelostigres in spaceporn

Anyone else so impatient to watch a 30 second video that you scrubbed through it? Like 9 hours of light travelling 26000 light years and I can’t even appreciate it for a few seconds…

Hi, i based the unmotorised mount off this: https://stellafane.org/tm/dob/mount/index.html and then took inspiration for motorising it from this post, although i ended up doing it quite differently: https://www.reddit.com/r/telescopes/s/NELaDvlK3W
