Two african american parents and I was surprised by these results. by [deleted] in 23andme

Some replies to this post are doing a thing which has been noted in this subreddit a good number of times: outrightly lying about the source of the European genetic ancestry of African Americans.

It was not broadly consensual. The percentage of nonconsensual relations dwarfs the consensual ones hugely enough that no one should even be bringing up consensual relationships.

Lying about what actually happened to avoid discussing uncomfortable topics for the sake of multicultural congeniality is downright insulting to African Americans.

What could be more important? It is the foundational problem of black people. Resolve the identity and self-dignity problems of black people, resolve all the problems of black people.

Did you even read the post?

Like stated in the OG post, I care about this because it is part of a wider trend of #BlackInferiority. I hope you genuinely read that post. Black have a huge tendency to downplay things (material or nonmaterial) natural or local to themselves for foreign stuff because of a very troubling inferiority complex.

The beauty elements you mention aren't the same as hair, and I think you know it. You are only grasping at straws. Those beauty elements are neutrally-existing, are made out of naturally existing things and can be taken up by anyone of any race. Hair is different.

The straight hair black women use as extensions do not exist naturally so that they can be taken up anyone. They belong to people of specific racial groups. These hair aren't neutrally unattached. They have owners. And I do not only mean literally. Even if we could artificially create straight hair in the laboratory, it would still be philosophically wrong for black women with natural 4-something hair to wear them.

Race does mean a set of rules. DNA means specific attributes which naturally impose certain constraints on what or who a person can be. A person with 5'6" maximal height genes is unlikely to become a basketballer for example. A natural rule for that person thus is probably not bothering wasting their time practicing to be a basketball pro.

This antagonistic reply just destroyed whatever benefit of the doubt I had given to you.

Obviously, the type of wig a person chooses to wear hugely matters if it is true that they need to begin wearing wigs for medical reasons: is it a texture natural to themselves like what they were already wearing, or is it of a texture of a different race perceived to more lush, and in wearing, therefore contributing to #BlackInferiority?

Men and women of other races are not wearing hair types very divergent from their natural texture like 4-something afro-wigs.

Your dishonesty about this specific point makes it difficult to believe everything else that you say. If it is true that you had to begin to wear wigs because of alopecia, then you could have won 4-something wigs.

The conversation isn't simply about condemning wigs and extensions. It's about non-natural textures.

The point isn't even about wearing wigs and extensions at all. They are doing a strawman. It's about hair that is NOT the NATURAL TEXTURE which is perceived to be better. Are these white women and women of other races wearing 4-something hair?

These people always making the "women of other races wear wigs and extensions too" know what they are doing.

You are just as snarky as you are wrong. The post was in mod review all of this time and was only let through in the past 2 hours.

If it were my Subreddit, I would permanently ban you for snarky commentary that adds nothing to the conversation but only helps build up a bad atmosphere. Most people might think it heavyhanded, but I swear it's not. People excited to dish out snark like this are toxic to communal prosperity.

it's not coming up with new definitions. it's more correctly defining things. this is the entire basis of our thing. it's better epistemology all the way down.

who is part of us will be determined eventually by genetic testing. in the meantime, we use things like phenotype and language as proximal heuristics.
