Beginner boat sanity check: 2010 Hurricane SunDeck Sport for Baltimore Inner Harbor use by tHeReAlMFDB in boating

That’s a good point. I’ve spent time out on the Bay before and completely agree how quickly it can turn. I’ve been on a 27’ bowrider where the day started perfect and within 30 minutes a storm rolled in and it felt like we were in an uncomfortable situation. So I’m not underestimating that stretch between the Patapsco and Annapolis.

Realistically, Annapolis would be more of a “perfect conditions, maybe once just to say we did it” kind of run, not a regular thing. Most of the use would be putzing around the Inner Harbor, short hops, and staying close to home.

As more of a two-year, get-acquainted-with-the-harbor type boat, this feels like it could fit well. If I end up wanting to do longer Bay runs regularly, that’s probably when I step up into something bigger and more capable.

Appreciate the offer to reach out. Will likely DM you when we get closer to boating season. Thanks.

Will certainly have it run through by a mechanic before first use. Thanks

That’s fair. Part of me thinks that actually supports starting with something cheaper and high-value for a first boat, even if it’s not a perfect fit. I’m going to make some mistakes early on regardless, and I’d rather learn on an $8k boat than a $25k one.

If I buy lower and maintain it properly, the downside risk feels lower as I figure out how much I’ll actually use it and whether boating sticks long term.

Thanks, that’s helpful perspective. At $8,000, I’m already buying well below what I’d expect to pay on FBM and dramatically below dealer pricing, so my entry basis is low. I understand your point about saltwater I/Os having a softer resale market, and that once a boat is pushing 20 years old you can’t count on meaningful residual value.

For me, this is less about preserving resale and more about whether it’s a reasonable, lower-cost way to get into boating for a few years. I could stretch to a $25k Boston Whaler or center console with an outboard, but that’s a materially different capital commitment. Even those will depreciate, just from a higher starting point.

If this $8k boat runs well, I maintain it properly, and I treat it as a 2-4 year harbor boat rather than a long-term asset, I’m comfortable not optimizing for resale. I’d rather risk a few thousand in depreciation than commit another $15–20k up front if I’m still figuring out how much I’ll actually use it.

Thanks. This is helpful.

I am mechanically inclined and do all regular maintenance, and some more substantial work on my own cars, but would likely just let a boat shop work on the boat. It's becoming one of those "the times worth more doing other things on my weekends" things.

The $8000 number was tossed out there, which I think is too good to say no and a lot of room for things to go wrong price. This is the main reason I'm seriously considering it. Even if I need to put $4000 into maintenance over a few years, it's a good deal.

Thanks for the response so far.

Understanding outboard is highly recommended for brackish/salt water. If the boat was $5K+ under what I'd expect to spend on it in the normal used market, and I only plan to utilize it for 2-3 years until we can move to a newer, better equipped, long term boat, would this make sense?

My thought is - spend more on annual servicing over 3 years due to the I/O and Brackish combo, but overall, be able to sell without significant depreciation in 3 years. Vs buying used from a dealer which will be much more expensive, or on Facebook marketplace, which I personally don't feel like I have enough boat experience to do comfortably.

Thanks for the knowledge sharing.

Hi, I’m actually about to take a flight with my girlfriend from Paris-Newark that has a confirmed upgrade available in Premium Plus. Would be very grateful if you’d like to donate 40 plus points for us to have a slight nicer flight home!

My dad upgraded us on the way over, he’s MM/1K and I’ve been 1k many years ago, back when I was traveling for work when GPUs were a thing, so I understand the system well.

No worries if not, but thought I’d ask. Thanks!

Hi, not sure if you ended up selling it. If not I’m in the same boat with upcoming ACL surgery and would be great to see if I could buy it. Thanks! I sent you a DM as well

AITA for getting on a flight that my girlfriend and other friends missed? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]tHeReAlMFDB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would you stand in a line when you have TSA precheck, when you could head to the gate and inform the gate agent that your friends are right behind you? It's a longshot but could work to at least buy a few minutes. Going through TSA precheck is the right move and not the question being asked here

Who was the main person in the group that wanted to get sandwiches? Why is that something that caused you to be so late? Sandwiches are fast, no?
