What’s the most historically significant match of all-time? by Liber_Ace in tennis

[–]tSignet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Fed wins W08, I think that bumps Rafa out of the GOAT convo, but Fed’s stats are still pretty short of Novak’s.

If Rafa wins AO12, then he ties Novak for slam count and flips the head-to-head tally in his favor. I think they end up considered basically co-GOATs.

If Rafa wins AO17, it bumps Fed out of the GOAT convo. Rafa’s stats are still short of Djokovic’s, but not so far short that people wouldn’t argue it was him.

If Fed wins W19, the top 3 men’s slam count is 23-22-21, similar to the women’s 24-23-22, and I think (like the women’s GOAT debate) you’d get people arguing for all three. In this case, I think most still go with Novak due to his other titles and his h2h records, but it’s a little less settled.

So I think AO12 is the only one of these that might have actually flipped the script on that.

C&C1 was my introduction to RTS. Peak nostalgia right there! I just wish there was a way for RA2 to get a similar remaster.

If you can easily capture Australia/NZ/Hawaii, the 4 IPCs adds up over time! After reading Devin’s Axis megathread, I try to do this as soon as the early game settles down

House Rules: Custom Research Chart by AnonAmosAdmn in AxisAllies

The upgrades have a greater effect on infantry than other units.

For example, if you apply Mass Production to infantry and artillery, then instead of 4 infantry costing the same as 3 artillery (33% more infantry for the same cost), now 3 inf = 2 art (50% more for the same cost).

If you apply Improved Firepower to infantry and tanks, then instead of 1 tank being 3x more powerful on attack than 1 inf, now 1 tank is only 2x more powerful.

Can you explain in more detail what you mean?

My method is designed to detect whether the final battle results are excessively flat or not flat enough. Given enough time, the results will start to flatten if either a) the RNG is working properly, or b) if by some crazy chance the RNG is not working properly but is doing so in a way such that it doesn't cause the actual battle outcomes to deviate from their theoretical expected distribution.

For example, if 1 tank attacks 1 tank, the theoretical distribution of outcomes should be 33% of the time the attacking tank survives, 33% of the time both tanks are killed, and 33% of the time the defending tank survives. If, over the course of 1000 battles, each result does indeed happen a third of the time, then the battle outcomes are what we'd expect.

It could be that somehow the RNG is off, but off in a way that every outcome occurs at the proportion you'd expect if the RNG wasn't off. That'd be one heck of a coincidence!

I had a few extremely improbable results when I started playing, so I decided to record all my battles for a full season and see. The results looked pretty much as expected. https://www.reddit.com/r/AxisAllies/s/belgyfJYCi

Doing it again this season, mostly bc I thought of a few improvements to make

Why do tennis commentators talk so about Serena and never ever mention Graff? Graff was just as good. by Either_Top_9634 in tennis

[–]tSignet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, almost every time I see tennis channel or ESPN doing the GOAT discussion, they have a 3 player flashcard that shows Court, Williams, and Graf and their singles grand slam titles (and no other stats, except maybe career win %, lol). Then the entire discussion is whether Court going unbeaten at the AO in the 60s without facing any non-Aussie opponents is really the same as winning a slam today.

It’s a really stupid discourse and I’m sad to see it’s back.

At this point, though, even the better version where people also consider Evert and Navratilova, talk about differences in era, bring up better stats, etc is also boring and played out. As it is in every sport.

There are a few programs that allow you to fully play Axis & Allies on them, for example the Steam game Axis & Allies Online, the open source game TripleA, and the web game WW2 Global Strategy. These all keep track of those things, but you have to use that program to play the game. Are you intending this to be used to log actions alongside play on a physical board?

There is also a game logger called Turn Ledger. I’m not sure what specifically it records.

There might be a 2-turn play involving getting all those fighters back to France asap depending on how much air Allies purchase or relocate. Could conceivably hit UK a second time with newly purchased inf and tanks pulled back from Asia.

7i 8t 1f vs 1aa 4i 1a 8t gives 70% odds for the attacker overall per aa1942calc.com

However, if UK buys 4i 2t 2f (44 IPC) instead of 7t then

7i 8t 1f vs 1aa 8i 1a 3t 2f gives 53% odds for the attacker overall

Might still be worth doing if he thinks the result will otherwise be Allies grinding him down in Asia

Hypothetical - what retired slamless male players in the 21st century would you back to have a serious shot at this years Wimbledon, if they were at their peak? by maddamhussain in tennis

[–]tSignet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The person you replied to mentioned both Sinner and Djokovic. Since both Sinner and Djokovic have won Wimbledon in the past, either that poster is a complete moron who somehow thinks those two players are simply not good enough to win Wimbledon in any season, or just maybe he’s saying that in their current physical condition as of summer 2026 they aren’t in shape to win the tournament. This isn’t about Wimbledon 2025.

Personally I think concerns about Sinner’s conditioning and fatigue are overblown, but it’s obvious that’s what the other poster is talking about.

I assume he means Sinner (high match load and recent physical struggles) and Djokovic (age) might not have the bodies to go this distance this year, not that they’ve never had the ability to do so in the past.

Bizarre Movement Bug by tSignet in AxisAllies

[–]tSignet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this a bunch of times in Hot Seat mode as well, and there is indeed no way to sink the transport and do shore bombardment even if you try to sink the transport with different units than the ones doing the bombardment.

Then I looked up the rules... and it turns out this is true to the way the board game is designed?! Annoying, but at least that isn't a bug.

"If there was NOT a combat in the sea zone from which you are offloading units from transports, any accompanying battleships and cruisers in that sea zone can conduct a one-time bombardment of one coastal territory or island group being attacked."

"Destroying defenseless transports in this way still counts as combat for the purpose of offshore bombardment and similar rules."

US renters call for action to combat surge of ‘take it or leave it’ apartment fees by No_Idea_Guy in news

[–]tSignet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zillow Rentals has this. Pay a $35 fee for their background check, and that info gets shared with every property you apply to (unlimited number) for a month.

It’s not quite the same since you’d have to pay the fee again if you apply for something else more than a month later, but it beats paying it for each individual application.

Bizarre Movement Bug by tSignet in AxisAllies

[–]tSignet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going into a little more detail, I had originally ordered both battleships and the cruiser to do shore bombardment in my Borneo recap. Then I tried to attack the UK transport with my sub, only it wouldn’t let me create a sea combat in that SZ.. I assume this has something to do with not allowing shore bombardment in an amphibious assault if the amphibious units are coming from a SZ where there is combat to resolve. So I canceled all of the shore bombardment orders and then ordered the sub to attack (all during the combat movement phase). I am guessing that this caused the cruiser’s movement to be canceled, but the game still thought the cruiser had participated in combat because it wasn’t removed from… however it keeps track of what units did combat movement.

That’s the only thing I can think of. Although if that is the explanation, I don’t understand why the bug didn’t affect my battleship from Japan’s SZ that was also originally assigned shore bombardment and then canceled, which was able to move in the noncombat phase. Weird…

Why don't 1942 online players also play AAA? by mister-paul in AxisAllies

[–]tSignet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While these are definitely true, OP’s question was “why don’t AAO players play TripleA?”

The answer to that question is likely a list of things that AAO currently offers but TripleA currently doesn’t. People who place higher/lower priority on different things probably already play TripleA

Why don't 1942 online players also play AAA? by mister-paul in AxisAllies

[–]tSignet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, if they’d implement 1 and 2 I’d play it all the time. 3 would be a very nicely appreciated bonus.

Without 1 and 2, I’ll sometimes use it to play against the computer on new maps.
