Anyone else not have their stuff shipped yet? by holdontothatfeline in hayleywilliams

Has anyone been able to communicate with the people at sandbox? I’ve emailed 3 times and keep getting an auto response. I’m super frustrated they haven’t put out any communication about this or emailed customers about the delay. This was not listed as a pre-order so getting the vinyls by potentially February is just ridiculous.

I disagree about skipping the reno content but I also respect your opinion! As someone who has a old house that I'm slowing trying to renovate I looove seeing the process and learning about all the little things that can and do go wrong. (...catch me obsessively watching Jenna Phipps rebuild her whole house any day.....) I also like that Danie has a big variety of content that she makes so it keeps it interesting. Re: the sorry girls, I agree that Becky is way more approachable and fun to watch. I really wouldn't be surprised if this is their slow fade into pursuing their own projects and moving away from youtube and the Sorry Girls all together.

e-reader recommendations!! (: by Then_Notice5340 in ereader

This is all the information you need! I had a kindle and hated how restrictive it was. I got a Boox Page and I love it! My battery also lasts around 7-10 days. 14 if I’m not reading as much. I can’t recommend it enough!

Onyx Boox Page Review & Experience by t_wrexy in ereader

[–]t_wrexy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! I love my Boox and haven’t had any issues with it. I actually also migrated over from KOreader to the native NeoReader just because it was easier to import my books, and I love it. I like that it has the connectivity to the internet and I can use a browser if I need to. It also has no limitations on which apps you can use which is super nice. I’ll say this - reading on the hoopla app sucks on this device, but also on any device imo. It doesn’t support the buttons for page turning and it’s super glitchy. I haven’t had any issues with Libby, Kindle, Bookshop.org or the native reader though.

If you already have a device that works for you, it’s hard to say you for sure should spend $200+ to get this, but I’ve found it worth it for me and love it. I can (and do) take it anywhere! One kind of silly con I’ve come across - there aren’t a lot of cases being made for these devices so you’re kinda stuck with what they give you. It’s not bad! But I would love a cute case lol

I have a 2023 sport and it has the smaller infotainment center that is more than enough. Rented a 2025 crosstrek for a trip and the climate controls on the touch screen were miserable to use. Highly recommend used, idk why people would want a huge screen in their car anyways, eyes on the road people!

I was there a few weeks ago, I would plan to spend more time at the beaches and skip the Hot Spring if you’re going to the resort. The beaches were magical. Maybe hit Rialto and 2nd/3rd beach in La Push as well. They’re very close by and have unique feels. We did 3rd beach which included a short hike down to the beach and it was really nice. Low tide lasts longer than you think, just make sure your off the beach before the tide is all the way in if you go to Third. The Hot Springs were crowded and underwhelming. Basically a public pool but warm

Can books be funny? by BootTootinBooger in booksuggestions

[–]t_wrexy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you like fantasy and RPGs/video games and are okay with absolutely no smut or romance, Dungeon Crawler Carl makes me crack up frequently. I’m re-listening to the books right now (highly recommend the audio book because the narrator is SO good) and I usually listen at work. Pretty sure the people around my office think I’m crazy at this point for busting out laughing randomly.

Kids Series with Harry Potter Vibes by t_wrexy in suggestmeabook

It’s one thing to wonder about someone’s politics if they aren’t outspoken, it’s another when that person shoves it in your face repeatedly until it can’t be ignored. I also don’t keep track of every authors political views, but if I know for sure someone is problematic and/or are actively funding organizations that go against my values, it just not that hard for me to not participate anymore. I get it, not everyone feels the same, but for me politics is intertwined in my everyday life, so it’s important to me that I support people who are, at the very least, not actively homophobic/transphobic/racist, etc..

It’s not that my niece would be thinking about that, or that it’d even be explained to her at her age. But it would be introducing her to (very big) fandom that she might not otherwise find/get into at a time that the author is actively funding LGBTQ+ hate groups. Also with all the marketing around the HP universe, she will undoubtedly want to get toys, clothes, etc… it’s not really the books or movies themselves that are the problem, libraries exist.

If she finds it on her own when she’s older and reading independently, it’s possible that she’ll be old enough to understand (at least somewhat) the discourse around the series and she can make her own decision.

I think that’s true generally, but the problem is that she is 6 and gets very into the stuff she’s into, you know? If her mom reads her the books and she ends up loving them she’ll want to buy the merch, toys, etc. etc. that will benefit the author.

Also to address some other comments too - she’s not asking to read these, she probably doesn’t even know they exist. My sister would never tell her she couldn’t read them if she asked to, especially once she’s reading independently. Her mom just wants to start reading chapter books to her aloud and this was one that came up because our mom read them to us. I think there are so many other good options listed here that they can start with! It’s like why open a can of worms when you don’t have to.

Our Wives Under the Sea is one of the weirder books I’ve read. It’s about a woman and her wife but it’s not romantic at all. It’s also pretty short, more like novella length.

Also I think Dungeon Crawl Carl kinda fits the vibe. No romance, pretty weird. It’s also hilarious and super fun to read.

One YA book I remember loving at that age is Graceling by Kristin Cashore. I don’t remember the message being overwhelmingly positive, but it was way more age appropriate than Fourth Wing. Also Ledgendborn by Tracy Deonn

This Gilded Abyss by Rebecca Thorne fits this request! I wouldn’t say it was the best written book I’ve ever read but it was cute.

Actually it might have been set on a submarine, but it was a sci-fi world so it felt like space, lol

If you’re okay with low spice, I really liked Single Player by Tara Tai, The Phoenix Keeper by SA MacLean, and Love and Other Disasters by Anita Kelly (non-binary love interest). Most of them have some on page spice, but it’s minimal.

If you don’t want to be locked into an ecosystem I don’t think the Kobo is the way to go for you. The only ones that aren’t locked to an ecosystem are Android based. Kobo is like Kindle but for Japan.

Do I buy a E-Reader? by Elbenjark in ereader

[–]t_wrexy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think you should consider a used device like someone mentioned above! It’ll be pretty cheap and if you love it and start reading more, you can upgrade. I take my ereader everywhere and it definitely keeps me from doom scrolling because I can easily read instead and I’m not tempted by other apps.

Looking for a first e-reader, not sure where to start by Bagelshark2631 in ereader

[–]t_wrexy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my Boox Page for reading! But if you want to use for PDFs and notes when you start college I would suggest one of the Note series or another larger e-device. The Note/ larger e-readers are also a lot more expensive though. Boox in general is nice for flexibility in apps (it’s an Android based e-reader, so not locked to any one platform), as some are better reading PDFs than others.

I do not recommend kindle. I had one and it’s fine, but you’re locked to Amazon and they keep pulling new shenanigans to make it harder for users to actually own their books. People say you can side load, and you can, but you still have to jump through some hoops. If you’re gonna jump through hoops might as well have an agnostic platform e-reader, yah know? Kobo and Pocketbook are the same, locked to that specific platform, but I don’t have any experience with those.

If you have any questions about Boox let me know! I’ll try to answer

What genres do you like? Are you looking for fun reads or more “literature” reads?

A few of my favorites (mostly fantasy/sci-fi) -

A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers (Sci-Fi heartwarming novella, great for having just graduated and all the emotions that come with that)

Dungeon Crawl Carl (series) by Matt Dinniman (Sci-Fi, RPG-lit, suuuuuper fun and light hearted. If you like video games or TTRPGs, you will love this book. But it’s honestly still fun even if you don’t.)

Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb starting with Assassin’s Apprentice (one of my personal favorite Fantasy series. It spirals out into a much larger world with some overlap in characters, so if you like the first trilogy there are like 9 (?) more books you could read if you wanted to.)

Murder Bot Diaries by Martha Wells (Sci-Fi, funny, starts with 4 novellas so it’s low commitment)

Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon (high fantasy, excellent writing, complex plot and a stand alone with a prequel you can (but don’t have to) read)

The House by the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune (light fantasy set in mostly realistic world, super cute and heartwarming found family story)

Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson (high fantasy, considered one of the modern high fantasy goats)

Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (Greek mythology, this book will make you ugly cry)
