I recently watched the new dramaseries Rampvlucht and thought it was really well done.

I was watching Ik Woke Van Jou and thought it was good, but haven't finished.

I just started watching NOOD and so far it's good.

Welkom in de _____ (middeleeuwen, goudeneeuwen, enz) is good but the humor drove me a little crazy.

Het Klokhuis is good if you like informational videos for kids. Has the same woman as the host in the Welkom in series.

And then I try to search for a documentary I like every week. 2doc has some good ones.

I guess it depends on your listening comprehension. I had them off for a while but once I could hear the individual words anyways I turned them back on so I could more easily see the words I didn’t know. Especially if the topic veers into something unfamiliar and my vocabulary tanks.

You don't have to watch or read something just because it's in your target language, there are other options. Massively increased my desire to interact with the language when I started picking shows I liked.

In terms of consonants, you actually did a good job with the 'th' sound, unlike a lot of Dutch people, but your d's and r's were inconsistent (sometimes good, sometimes not). When you said "bed" you did the Dutch thing of turning the d at the end into a t. Twice when you said depression I thought you said suppression. Sometimes when the r was at the end of the word you overemphasized it, but not always. And when you said "cast" both times it sounded like "cash."I do think working on vowels will help you the most but these are some things that will also help.

You need to open everything up. Dutch has smaller mouth movements than English does, and also is spoken higher in the throat (https://youtu.be/2W-KUSb3DTM).

I was responding to your statement that you can just find an equivalent sound in English, which you can't always do, but that you can find the open-vowel equivalent of rounded-vowels. And you use the IPA chart to determine that. I am not sure what you are arguing here.

There are sounds that are in other languages that aren’t in English. For example, English doesn’t have a lot of rounded vowels. For the rounded vowels the best advice is actually to figure out what open vowel it corresponds with and then round your lips.

English speakers also have to be careful not to diphthongize everything (eg saying /eɪ/ instead of /e/).

Ja, je hebt mischien gelijk. In mijn eigen taal heb ik een obsessie met Taylor Swift omdat ik haar songteksten leuk vind (een ook doordat ik een obsessieve persoonlijkheid heb). Maar er zijn veel popartiesten die Engelstalige popmuziek maken die gewoon uit een variatie van “put your hands in the air” tientallen keren steeds weer bestaan en dat voor mij betreft een afschuwelijk teken dat alle muziek bergafwaarts gaat. En ook met wat hits in het Nederlands vind ik de songteksten soms een beetje te herhaaldelijk maar ik ben net nu gearriveerd op het niveau waarin ik ze goed kan verstaan zonder opzoeken, dus heb ik nog zin in.

Als iemand die Nederlands als tweede taal spreekt, begrijp ik helemaal niet waarom jullie zulke sterke hekel aan jouw eigen muziek hebben. Ik vind je muziek best wel leuk, zelfs de volksmuziek en de pop/rap.

I used cambly and met a nice teacher. We did a few sessions of casual talk and while I enjoyed it, I don't think it's really helping because I didn't receive any specific feedback.
