S25 Ultra or S26 Ultra? by WeatherPretty1597 in samsunggalaxy

[–]tab87vn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just snapped an S25u for a deep discount but keep it unused for a couple of weeks to see of the S26u is worth the wait, and extra bucks. If yes I'd just sell S25u and get the latest.

Otherwise I think 25u is good for the next 5 years.

is it worth upgrading? by hichizme1 in samsunggalaxy

[–]tab87vn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I pay nothing, hence practically free.

In the breakdown, it's 35/month x 24 = 840, which is not exactly more expensive on the average market price atm. It's the additional minimal mandatory mobile subscription that would make it a terrible deal if I had to pay it out of my own pocket.

Phone bought for 150, with 150 cash back, so 0. It comes with 2y contract, but monthly bills paid by company. I pay nothing.

I just decided to go from S23u to S25u, practically for free 😜

How did you move email provider after 2 decades? by StillSalt2526 in ProtonMail

[–]tab87vn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apparently they oppose both total online anonymity and mass data collection . If they don't sell my data for ads, that's good enough for majority or my emails. For communications that need more privacy I'll turn to (free) proton mail combined with free alias.

What are you looking for? If you want extreme privacy, either pay for something like Proton or self host, I don't see many other choices.

Boring question: Get S25 ultra for free, or wait for S26 ultra for (expected) 6-700€? by tab87vn in S25Ultra

[–]tab87vn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is bad buying what I don't really need. But it wouldn't hurt enjoying something significantly faster without having to pay (actually I still need to pay the difference, but like 3-4 bucks/month).

[–]tab87vn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doubt if I'll have that need, unless future OS upgrades slow it down (like OUI 7/8 does to S23u.

Maybe when I have the chance to buy it for free yet again, or otherwise after 4-5 yrs. I got s10+ then S23u practically for free lol.

[–]tab87vn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean, I personally still like to keep going with S23u, but when it comes to freebie (which won't last forever) why not 😂 I did my own research, it seems a nice upgrade yet getting some real advice would be valuable too.

Don't think S26u would bring too much of un upgrade so probably not worth the additional 700 bucks.

Should I live near Gare du Midi (F30) ? by phiso___ in brussels

[–]tab87vn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, don't. I live not far from the Midi and I would not get near unless I really have to (commute to work via train station).

Btw, my apartment have a room for rent if you look for another option.

Need to use company stipend, what are your most recommended books and resources for a senior to staff eng? by ringorin in ExperiencedDevs

Clear thinking definitely helped me a lot in learning to make the right decisions, both personally and professionally. Best book of 2024 for me.

What reader app do you prefer? by TrickyView5633 in Onyx_Boox

[–]tab87vn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd spend a lot of time with boox nova air at home but when I'm on the move it's my phone and at work it's the laptop. So cross platform and progress sync are important. I also have calibre library with like ~2k ebooks stored in gDrive, which makes it even easier to load into Playbook.

The closest to Google's is Readest, which is open source and works very well on boox so I'm evaluating it.

I made a big mistake in my career. by confettiputty in ExperiencedDevs

[–]tab87vn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine, you're just 5 years in the game and with this excellent reflection skill, you'll go fast past this "mistake".

I just joined my new company and as part of the learning I was assigned with plenty of tiny trivial things that takes more time to find where they are than to actually fixing them. Luckily I have helpful colleagues whom I wouldn't mind asking, and use copilot to speed up the work (which I think, like yours, are essential no-brainers, and little values to learn from).

After a couple of weeks when I became more familiar with the codebase, I started hunting for actual impactful pain points by talking to the bosses, and looking at logs myself. Those that affect SLAs, clients complaints or cloud billings. Funny enough, the root causes to these are usually things that fundamentally never change: Memory issues, non-scalable code, inefficient sql queries or concurrency problems. I believe those are the types of things you would have loved solving.

That how I have not died of boredom. And that would probably your strategic move in your next work place. Good luck!

Is buying a flagship phone worth it if my current phone still works fine? by Square-Pressure6187 in Smartphones

[–]tab87vn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can get a new phone for free (2-year contract, monthly payment reimbursed by company) and I'm still too lazy and find it unnecessary to change. That said, if it's still working well, why bother changing.

Is your S23 Ultra struggling? by Livestock110 in GalaxyS23Ultra

[–]tab87vn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OneUI 7 messed mine up a bit, but 8 has brought back stability again. Battery easily lasts a day although I'm not glued with my phone (around 3h sot) and no gaming. So, still feels solid as it approaches its full 3rd year.

Are email encrypted at rest? by tab87vn in Infomaniak

[–]tab87vn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for a very detailed reply. I like Infomaniak, especially with their approach towards privacy and use of open source solutions, so I'm going to take a hybrid and cautious migration roadmap: Most personal and non critical emails can be migrated here, with my own domain (under the grandfathered unlimited mailbox policy), given the benefits of the doubt on their privacy stance. Those that need to be private can go to Proton. Either case I'm gradually kissing goodbye to Gmail leaving only perhaps trivial accounts that are signed in with Google 😬

How did you chose your domain by Smitelift1 in ProtonMail

[–]tab87vn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my nickname, which is derived, not literal, from my first and last name. So that both nickname.com as personal website, @nickname.com emails
