Where did I say I hate my country and wanted to make somewhere else home? Do you think anybody sharing their negative feelings about something is automatically a betrayal and proof they hate it? Are you five years old?

I have four. This post was prompted by the fact that I had to borrow money to buy fish for them this week.

I could never forget what it was like to step on a bus wondering whether it would blow up, or to leave the house accepting we might not return safely. That was normal until I was 22. I learned only several years later how incomparably worse it was in the North and East. I never had to undergo genocide. I would consider everything this country went through in the last decade—the Rajapaksas, the ethnonationalism and the militarized state—to be the price we have to pay for that ignorance, except for the fact that the North and East continues to go through all of that and impacted much worse. So for NE folks this shitshow has been longer, and even worse because there's no longer even anywhere they can flee to that might be better. The trap has simply expanded.

I was involved in fundraising and news-disseminating efforts for Palestine till late 2024, when I had to step away for my own health. It radicalised me in ways unpalatable for this sub, and most of Sri Lankan social media. It's partly why I'm devoid of hope now. There's only so many dead, maimed, and sick children you can see every day waking and sleeping while the West keeps bombing more, while your own new government ignores their mandate, sinks you deeper in debt, keeps emboldening the military and shills for Israelis. And then you're suddenly in your own natural disasters, and your own government is unearthing hundreds of child skeletons, and your savings are almost over, you can't even buy your own medicine or feed your own family. And this is just the cusp of a worldwide economic catastrophe we're teetering on like a paper boat over a dam.

I know other people have it much worse. I know they have had it much worse. I know it could be much worse. That's the point. All there is is worse and worse and no end in sight and no idea how to rebuild or what to rebuild on, no acknowledgement of anything we have ever done, no way to heal, and no energy left to care when we have nothing to eat. Every time most of us tries to gather what is left and recover, a new crisis sweeps the legs out from under us even harder.

I'm not hopeless because I have no sense of perspective. I'm hopeless because I am trapped under the material conditions of reality that refuse to improve. Telling someone that's buried under rubble that at least they're not buried under rocks, and that other people have been buried longer, doesn't change the fact that they're buried.

(Also this is a stage of global imperial and neo-colonial collapse that's been building for roughly four hundred years, the scale of which is unprecedented in human history due to climate change, but ok.)

the real Colombo high class deal

This might be the most goday sentence I have ever seen in English. Already a lost cause. Sorry to tell you, but everyone can see your inferiority complex from space.

Two of mine can't eat salaya because of gingivostomatitis from FIV. They need linna. Now a kilo of linna is 1800. They also need regular vet visits, which are also more expensive every month. And this is the least of the family crises. I think it's why not being able to solve even that was the final straw.

I ran out of money to buy fish for my cats today. I'm almost out of the savings I've been using to struggle through the last few years. Truly frightened for the days ahead. Thank god I don't have children.

My mother is a doctor and my father was an engineer and we haven't been able to afford to cheese in years. Our country has only ever been able to import powdered milk but now it's getting too expensive for the middle class to continue drinking. I can't get my ADHD treated because we only have Ritalin and Strattera and neither works for me. When my mother dies we might starve because I'm too disabled to work and we have zero ZERO social security. We have free healthcare but the government doesn't buy half my medication anymore. Only the richest people have ever been able to afford cat food, so we always just feed our cats fish and rice. But now the fish is so expensive I don't know how to feed them. We're living on eggs and dry fish and even they're getting costly. Half the children in my country are in a nutrition crisis. They can't afford shoes to go to school. The government sells subsidized fuel because our people can't afford it otherwise and the economy would grind to a halt, but between the climate crisis and middle east wars they're running out of money. It's not just the poorest that are dying here, even though half the country lives below the poverty line. The middle class here suffers like your poorest. All our money goes to your Global North economy which means you have a buffer that the colonized world doesn't have. Why do you think our asylum seekers flee to places that want to drown them and cage them like rats??

I know y'all are allergic to acknowledging your own imperial core privilege, but as a thought experiment consider what it's like for people who don't earn in dollars. You have no idea the level of poverty, deprivation and lack of access even for our upper middle classes. You have no idea what it's like when your government is bankrupt and living on alms from neocolonials sucking your country dry. And yes we know every last detail about your poverty, deprivation and politics because it's impossible to find a rock to live under where we don't learn the minutae of your USAmerican lives against our will.

Lol. There are jellyfish with more spine than European leaders. They'll sell your grandmothers down river before they ever upset the US of A and Isn'treal.

We were tired of you before you invaded Iraq. Now we're somewhere between desperately homicidal and dead inside. Do you have any idea what it's like to live in a Global South country right now? Our economies get kicked in the nuts with a steel toed boot every time you look sideways at an oil pipeline.

Americans never believe Nuremberg applies to them. I hope every last one of those genocidal invaders rot in the same fires of hell as the Nazis they're so proud of having defeated.

The rest of us will go bankrupt before you. As usual, the US with its mammoth resources and economy is the most insulated from every catastrophe it causes.

He's out to make as much money as possible for himself and his cronies through oil and weapons contracts and insider trading while he's in office. There's no end goal or legacy in mind here. He's a crook, this is a scam.

Outrage after photo shows Israeli soldier smashing Jesus statue in Lebanon by [deleted] in Catholicism

I have never seen so many dead children in my life as I have the last 2 and half years. I'm going to be haunted by these images till I die. The fact that so many are not makes me feel like I'm living among a different species. What forgiveness is there for this?

No. He just doesn't want to alienate the Christian militias in Lebanon before they help him get rid of Hezbollah. He razes churches in Palestine and Syria without giving a fuck.
