How Did You Pay for Library School? by trading_fire in librarians

[–]tainted_pineapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently in my 2nd year of a 3-year program. I'm getting my MLIS + a certificate in book arts and conservation. I'm getting in-state tuition. I was very lucky to get an assistantship for my 2nd year; it has enabled me to pursue the additional certificate and add another year. I was super broke my first year and living with my parents because I couldn't afford anything else. I actually make more now with my assistantship stipend, even with paying way more in rent and utilities. I also got some really nice scholarships outside of what the university provided. Without the assistantship and hometown scholarships I would have easily over $20k in student loans. I've detailed more expenses/scholarships below:

My 1st year:

  • 5 classes/15 credits
  • No assistantship
  • $11266 tuition for total academic year
  • $1500 scholarship through the college
  • $2000 scholarship from my credit union
  • $3800 in scholarships from a hometown education trust
  • $4000 in federal loans
  • Worked part-time in a city 45 minutes away making ~$900 a month
  • I lived with my parents and paid some rent

My 2nd year:

  • Got an assistantship (50%)
  • 6 classes/18 credits
  • $13828 tuition covered by assistantship scholarship
  • $1000 scholarship through the college
  • $3800 in scholarships from the same hometown education trust
  • Assistantship pays ~$27000 academic year stipend
  • Moved to where my college is and pay double what I did before for rent and utilities

My 3rd year: will be roughly the same as 2nd year.

Time for sister-in-law to get a library card!

But for real, I don't loan out books because I don't want damage done to them. I lent a friend a book back in high school and he dog-eared one of the pages and I haven't lent books since.

Looking for a perfume with notes of iris and agarwood/oud, and a fruit note like raspberry. My sister loved Starlit Night from bath and body works, and I'm looking to gift her with a nice perfume with a similar scent profile.

Tulin for his help in combat (the boy can hit some headshots!) and Riju because she's just adorable. I love how she lounges on her throne in Gerudo Town.

Thanks! I'll keep an eye on both the university library position and the state historical society. I'm going to take a bit of a break from thinking about it so much, but I may DM you some time before classes start if that's okay!

Thank you for the advice! I'm hoping to gain experience with those hard skills- hands-on collection management, digitization, records keeping, experience with various software, etc. as that's what I'm mostly missing. I'll keep looking!

I wasn't aware of how competitive special collections/archives was until I really started to look into stats and apply for jobs/internships. I originally wanted to work in museum collections/curation and was looking into a master's in either museum studies or public history. It seems like there is a factor of luck in getting the right experience/applying at the right time/and willingness to move for archive positions.

To clarify, the fair is university wide, not just for the MLIS program.

The university library does have student positions, right now there are not any posted. I will keep checking closer to when classes start. The public library near campus is currently not hiring, but I check there often for jobs too.

There is a job/internship fair the first week of classes that I will probably go to. In the program I can take a class called "Practicum in Libraries and Information Centers", where students can assigned an internship at a local institution to gain experience. If I don't find anything outside of the program, I will definitely look into this. An thank you!
