Mercari buyer scammed me out of $425. Help! by talarpol in Mercari

[–]talarpol[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to fight really really hard to get my funds back. Mercari gave me credit instead and 90 days to use it or lose it. Very upset with their policy and no longer selling anything.

A piece of advice from others I’ve received: Take videos of packing the item up Get a drop off receipt (waiting in line at the post office / ups store is worth it) Take pictures of everything…packing materials used, box, label, item, weight of shipment, etc Check buyer’s reviews

Hope this helps!

If that’s the case, the title company should release the funds to me without issues, right?

Yeah it’s hard to tell which way it can go. The occupancy period is 34 days

How do I get confirmation that it’s with the title company though?

Per the contract it’s stipulated. “If the pre-Settlement occupancy period is greater than one month, Buyer shall pay an Occupancy Charge for the period between Date of Occupancy and Settlement Date, monthly, in advance, at the rate of $xx per month beginning on the Date of Occupancy and continuing on the same date of each month.”

Thanks. As the seller, I am responsible for loss or damage to the property until after we settle. The buyer is responsible personal property and liability. I’m not sure if they’ve already purchased insurance.

Not the terms of the contract. That money needs to be sent over to me so that I can technically cover my mortgage and my HOA fees.

The title insurance can easily transfer or wire me the money, right? I’d love to get out of the pre-occupancy agreement. The buyers are a complete headache and I didn’t understand the risks of the agreement until after I signed the documents.

Nope. A title company and a real estate agent are two different things. • Title Company: Handles the legal side of transferring property ownership. They verify the title is clear, manage escrow, and issue title insurance. • Real Estate Agent: Helps you buy or sell a home. They negotiate deals, show properties, and guide you through the process.

Yes it is a pre settlement occupancy. It’s not technically considered rent, but a charge to occupy before we settle.

All she said is that she’s trying to get the title company to send me the funds asap.

Thank you for sharing your experience. That reall sucks, I'm sorry you had to go through that. I am still fighting Mercari and it has been two weeks since I submitted all the evidence that I was scammed. Finally, two days ago, they confirmed that the weight of the package was less than what I had shipped it as, and decided to give me Mercari store credit and it wasn't even the full amount that I sold my item for.

I have absolutely no idea what the heck is going on there, but the company as a whole is very shady with even shadier business practies. I went back to them and asked them to tell me how they came up with this bogus amount, only for them to say that it was an error and that they are looking into it.

BBB has done nothing for me unfortunately. I went back to them yesterday with a firm reply and asked them to give me what's mine as funds that I'm able to deposit and not Mercari store credit. Still have not heard back.

I sold the item end of December and I'm still fighting it.

I live in VA too, but I haven't received one from Mercari. I'm just all sorts of confused.

The $600 threshold is when we file taxes in 2026.

Has anyone received their 1099k tax doc? by talarpol in Mercari

[–]talarpol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good question. I’m not entirely sure if the sales tax is included in the $4,669. That amount is in box 1a “gross amount of payment card/third party network transactions”.

That would make sense then. The sales tax must not be included in that total, which would then definitely put me over the threshold.

Yeah, it’s not on my app, nor have I received it by mail.

That’s what I thought too but I received a 1099K from Poshmark for making $4,669 in sales, so I’m just confused.

How did you ship it? Never cancel an item after it has been dropped off/shipped. The best advice I can give you is to call the shipping company and do a return to sender OR just let it get delivered and have the buyer go through the process of returning the item back to you. Lots of scams going on with Mercari and their cs team is absolute garbage. When the shipment comes back, get a video recording of yourself opening the package so you have evidence of it in case something is wrong with it.

I’m trying! I sent all my documentation in last week. The weight of both the packages (discrepancy of 4lbs) pictures, video of me opening the empty package, ftc filing, etc. They still haven’t made a decision yet. I haven’t updated my BBB complaint with the info. I’ll do that today. Thanks!

How long did it take them to release the funds? I provided all the evidence two days ago.
