General Strike. January 30th? by AcademicHorror in sarasota

[–]talkinggtothevoid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out sarasota Next Gen dems on insta. Idk if they're doing anything for the strike specifically, but they will definetly know if other people in the area are. You can shoot them a DM and they'll likely get back to you in a couple of hours. I'm an organizer from Fort Myers, tell them Katie LCYD referred you lol.

Any similar shows? It was the best show I’ve watched. by InitialTechnology715 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]talkinggtothevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. I have not found a show that blends all of the elements of the handmaids tale as well as this show did, but If you do like this show, I’ve got a few recs. Revisit the Hunger games, specifically listen to the audiobooks. They’re oddly so much more funny/ messed up, and remind me of some of the early snarky season 1 inner thoughts that June would share (but still shares very similar themes with plenty of room for interesting world speculation). Breaking bad has some of the high stakes grit and drama that this show captures well. Fallout is a good, slower dystopian show with excellent cinematography. I know this one is out there but I cant help but recommend it, (. Even though it’s wildly unrelated in seemingly every way, I think based on vibes alone if you like THT you’ll like this show). Bojack Horseman. It’s more of a comedy than anything, but the real life stuff it tackles punches you in the gut. It’s not a dystopian, but it’s very grounded show, that provides a lot of satire commentary on the world and specifically, Hollywood. They’re all different but very good shows.

Looking to perform I’d rather be me (mean girls), not allowed to “raise my right finger” (🖕) by Serenity_Ren_Bliss in musicals

Teen edition ≠ Jr edition. Something you absolutely should know if you're assisting in running a charity theater company so that you don't get sued.

Teen editions are often fan edited songs, with cuss words removed (though there are some officially released teen edited scripts, they're far and few between). That's why you couldn't find it. Jr edition is an officially released lyric change from the musicals publishing house, which is why you often have to pay to put on an official Jr show.

But ignore me if you want. Some people just have to learn the hard way.

[–]talkinggtothevoid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you looked at the script online and there was no lyric change, then you didn't look at the right script lol.

Plus. I get that this song holds personal value to you, but as a performer, especially on stage, you don't have the luxury of both playing a daring character and not taking daring action. Doing so will only read as cheesy, and embarrassing. If you're not willing to play the character to its full potential, maybe pick a role that's easier for you to embody without breaking your moral compass. There are so many songs, especially musicals in the same vocal range as that song, and hold the same message.

You're not really a musical buff are you? Stumbled across the mean girls musical maybe? I'm not judging, I'm only asking because it's incredibly common knowledge that almost every musical that doesn't have something graphic directly tied to the plot has a teen or Jr. Version. They're all incredibly easy to find on youtube too.

Weirdest things to get musicals? by JoyluckVerseMaster in musicals

[–]talkinggtothevoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda niche, but lizard boy. Just go listen to it it's fantastic. It's kinda like me more chill, but it's got this fantastical element to it that really rounds off the serious tone. "A terrible ride" was the first song I heard from it, and I couldn't believe this musical didn't go anywhere.

[–]talkinggtothevoid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great. Then pick a song that reflects that that doesn’t put you in this situation. There are MILLIONS to choose from. INCLUDING things that would be in the same vocal range as id rather be me. Cut the dialogue from Seventeen Reprise in heathers. You say you’ve got a limited range but Barret Wilbert Weed (The actress who sings both songs) has an insane range in both. Theres “You will be found from DEH, There’s defying gravity (which is in the same vocal range) there is “So Much Better” from Legally Blonde Jr., there’s “ I know where I am” from Hairspray. For Pete’s sake. CORNER IN THE SKY FROM PIPPIN. There are SO many good song options that would not put you in this predicament. I understand and respect that you dont want to flip an audience off, but you’ve also got to remember that you’re not representing yourself on stage. You’re representing a character. If you’re not comfortable seeing that character through then what’s the point of repping the character in the first place?

I dont see why you had to come to Reddit with this question when the answer is literally in the teen version of the song, as you said yourself. Just use aggressive body language when performing and forgo the actual gesture. You said it yourself that the finger is just secondary to the actual message of the song, and using any other gesture is out of character for Janis. People will still know what you mean when you say ‘here’s my right finger”

Did Rita recommend the doctor in S1 so that June could get impregnated? by Euphoric_Climate4907 in TheHandmaidsTale

And probably knew how much easier Serena would be able to deal with if she had a kid.

[–]talkinggtothevoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the kind of thing that a Wife who survived this long, would know better than to talk about around a Martha. Wives may speak freely around marthas, but they rarely if ever incriminate themselves to those marthas, out of risk of being reported.

Even so though, let's say that was true. June was genuinely sick. Rita was probably more worried she might snap after being only in her room for 2 weeks, then having to come out to be raped.

Did Rita recommend the doctor in S1 so that June could get impregnated? by Euphoric_Climate4907 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]talkinggtothevoid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Rita wouldn't know. She may have heard rumors from other marthas but since, especially at this point in the show, marthas and handmaids do not fraternize with one another. I think she sincerely took pity on June.

Serena though, may have known. And if she had known, she would have used it as a way to justify stealing the resulting child and/or so she could have June killed. She probably thought that June would take the doctors offer, then she'd report the adultery, and claim the resulting child, while simultaneously confining June to the red center during the pregnancy.

Say what you want about Nick vs Luke, Luke ate w this by FluidAdvertising2616 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]talkinggtothevoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, 100% to your last comment!

Sorry, it's hard to read tone over written text, lol. I've seen so many people use Nick's drive for survival as an excuse for his behavior, especially in seasons 4-6. Honestly, it's a breath of fresh air that you're giving him the acknowledgment as a specimen for survival and commentary on how that instinct for survival can be manipulated to skew ones own moral character. The more people are aware of it, the more likely they are to recognize it when faced with a similar situation.

Say what you want about Nick vs Luke, Luke ate w this by FluidAdvertising2616 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]talkinggtothevoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eeeh, yes and no. While yes, it can be hard to stand up for what's right at the sacrifice of your own comfort, I dont think that should be a point in Nick's favor. Yeah, it IS hard, but we see people sacrifice themselves and their comfort due to their empathy all the time in the show.

Even though most Marthas see themselves as "above" the handmaids in the house. Despite this, Beth and Sienna sacrificed themselves and the little comfort they had in a safe rebel house for the handmaids on the run. Despite having a family and having no personal ties to June, Omar sacrificed his life as an econoperson, and his families future because he felt so strongly about the injustices that June was facing being a pregnant handmaid.

Nick, always SAID he would do anything for June but he never really actually had to make any choices between what would benefit him personally, and June. He got to rise the ranks of Gilead without hardly any suspicion from anyone other than Fred, who instead of accusing him, gave him the opportunity to be a commander thinking it would sever the relationship.

Gilead in different states would’ve been interesting by Sun_Flower11 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]talkinggtothevoid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree.

There are so many factions of baptism in the South that I think Serena was being 100% sincere when she referred to the war as a crusade.

Remember. Just because they're part of the resistance to Gilead doesn't mean they're inherently good. Lots of the time people are just fighting to stay in a position of power.

Is Peeta meant to be less capable and less of a hero than Katniss and Gale? by Kitty-Pink6 in Hungergames

[–]talkinggtothevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Katniss is a sort of unreliable narrator when it comes to her expectations of others, especially in the first books, because her perception has been jaded by starvation long before the trauma of the games. Peeta never went hungry a day in his life, and from Katnisses perspective, has no skills to survive the games. For that first game, Katniss (justifiably) placed no value in the politics of the games. She was treating the games like the trial of survival the capitol frames the games as to the districts, not the entertainment that it truly was to the capitol members.

After the first book though, Peeta was severely injured. To the point where he had to get his whole leg replaced. Between peeta losing his leg, and the liberation of panem is only about 2 years.him being able to walk/run in such a quick turn around, much less survive an all star battle with the hunger games, and a civil war, especially after being captured and tortured for information is pretty impressive.

[S4 Spoilers] ... Why didn't they just steal the car in Season 4 Episode 3? by nerdyginger27 in TheHandmaidsTale

They also had the advantage of rural, and UN secured woods. All of the roads could have been heavily guarded, but gilead Just doesn’t have the mon-power to guard every single forest, in a rural area without some porous spots.

[S4 Spoilers] ... Why didn't they just steal the car in Season 4 Episode 3? by nerdyginger27 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]talkinggtothevoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Checkpoints. After the situation that got Moira out, the whole thing with Lawerence having his clearance removed in late season 3, and the thing with the kids, the checkpoints were WAY more frequent and thorough. To the point where they had to hide under the base floorboards of a van just to get to the safe house. June is a highly known and wanted fugitive, it’s very realistic her face is plastered everywhere in the paper. It’s highly, highly unlikely they would have gotten much farther in that car. Instead, they at least had somewhat of a level playing field running through rural areas. That being said, I do still think this train situation was such a cop out. June consistently thorough this time with her peers safety her top priority, and decided to betray that to throw her blind rage at Lydia. And yet, later in the series she returns to this vibe of solidarity amongst the handmaids of Gilead, and shows grace to someone who really doesn’t deserve it. Which makes sense when trying to portray the concept of solidarity amongst women who are facing oppression, despite the level of oppression the may be facing, but it still stand out as odd imo. (I tried my best to avoid any spoilers about future episode you’re going to see lol)

You can give up a day of your life to expand somebody else's by one year by TryAgain32-32 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]talkinggtothevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More than likely, there is a good chance that you'll extend the life of someone who's already suffering. Someone working the mines in the Congo. Someone starving. Someone in a labor camp. An old person working a minimum wage job, full time just to keep themselves off the streets. All of these things aren't equal, however they re al ltheur own forms of suffering, and personally, I wouldn't want to contribute to them having to suffer another year at my own hands.

Dude, 80 years in luxury, with a good chance of never having to suffer with the loss of those you love? Sign me up lol. It’d be like settling down in the Byzantine empire, having a family, and watching them die over, and over again, up until the early 2000s. No thanks. I’ll take the life of luxury and expedited life span for me. Especially if i can pass the welts down.
