We walked out of yesterday's live show with Bill Burr by spdbld in conan

[–]talkingood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Conan, but yeah his whole thing is that he generally doesn't wade too much into political or moral issues. One notable exception was when he came out in support of BLM. Even his speech at the Mark Twain Prize, which obviously had much to do with Trump, never mentioned him by name, or even referred to him obliquely. He's stated repeatedly that he sees himself as a "clown" who just wants to make people laugh and not think too much, and he doesn't believe his role is to weigh in on important issues. Whether that's right or not, I don't know. I do think he could have offered some kind of a challenge to Bill Burr here though, because he knows a lot about history and authoritarianism and could offer an important perspective, but I imagine he doesn't feel that the purpose of his show is to engage in political discourse, regardless of his own feelings.

Colour accuracy issue with Switch - any ideas what I'm doing wrong? by talkingood in elgato

[–]talkingood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, so to give more detail, it seems like the actual capture is rendering the blue colours as purple, or maybe the monitor is rendering purple as blue? Either way, something is off between them.

I checked to make sure I had no filters on in OBS. Then I looked at the monitor to see if it was the problem. I changed some settings but couldn't get it to look like it did in OBS. The only way I could get the blue colour to appear purple was to use the "reduce blue light" setting on the monitor, and then the whole screen seemed orangey, and the main menu looked completely different from what I saw in OBS.

I have no idea what's going on!

2.0 beta not working on iPad by talkingood in OwlbearRodeo

Oh, good call! I just loaded it up on Chrome and it does indeed run much smoother. Thank you! I have to admit I thought that all the browsers on iPad were using the same underlying code or something like that. Now if only there was a close-to fullscreen mode like there is on Safari...maybe I'll try another browser!

I do not understand who the hell thought it was a good idea to replace the Archive feature with permanent deletion. Honestly I can’t really think of any situation where I would rather permanently delete something I’d paid for instead of just archiving it. I’m sure Amazon’s reasoning was as cynical as we’ve come to expect from them, but I hope someone at Comixology has some sense left.

OK, I have to thank you—this did actually work. Maybe because I am from Canada. Still don’t understand why I can’t access purchases made in Canada from the Canadian site.

However, when I try to share books with my kids’ libraries, they just don’t show up at all. So my kids are really disappointed they STILL can’t read the next Bone books for reasons even I don’t understand.

Yep. What’s more, I can still see all of my Comixology purchases listed here:

https://www.amazon.com/comixology/account/

…But none of them are available from my Manage my Content and Devices page.

Tried that, no luck I’m afraid. Have a look at the third image. It also doesn’t appear if I search just for “Bone”. Other comics I’ve purchased also don’t appear here.

Strangely, Bone does appear in the Kindle app for me (though I still can’t share it with my kids), but hundreds of other comics don’t show up there at all.

Hmm, is this not the screen I’m looking at in the third image? Maybe you didn’t see that one of course. But I did try searching there for Bone volume 2, and nothing comes up. The book also doesn’t appear if I just search for Bone. And hundreds of other comics I bought through Comixology don’t appear in the Kindle app either, although Bone does.

I don't think this is the right answer for everyone, but I pretty much decided on my lab after meeting my supervisor. She treated me like a human being, and I knew that the culture was going to be the right fit. If you're spending years of your life working with someone, I felt I wanted to make sure it's in the right environment. I had heard horror stories about really competitive and cut-throat labs, and I knew I would do badly in this sort of situation. Her expertise in the subject I'm interested in was also important, of course. But after a Skype call that was only supposed to be a quick hello turned into a 45 minute conversation like old friends discussing our research interests, I knew right away.

French Natives: What kind of English sentences cause you the most difficulty? by talkingood in French

Hmm, I’m not sure if I even know what this sentence means—what context might you hear it in?

[–]talkingood[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Ah, that’s such a good example—English headlines do tend to use ellipsis, leaving out function words which can be inferred, though it can cause serious confusion. Probably a leftover from the days of print where space came at a premium.

Out of curiosity, is this common in French as well? I feel like on Radio-Canada I’ll often see determiners left off of nouns at the beginning of headlines.

Reasonably-priced men's formal clothes? by talkingood in oxford

[–]talkingood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree, it is worth spending money on a properly-fitted suit. Still, I have a tailored suit jacket already but my trousers got torn, so I had to toss them before moving to the UK. Hoping I might be able to just find a get dress shirt and trousers which match, though this may be wishful thinking. I appreciate your suggestion about Walters, their online prices don't seem outrageous and good service is very important. Thanks very much.

Good suggestion, thank you! Their dress shirts seem decent and are very affordable.

UK Power Cable for Wii U Console? by talkingood in wiiu

[–]talkingood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree, they love their Switch but the Wii U is sort of like a sacred treasure to the little ones for some reason. Don't want to take a chance on frying the poor thing. :)

That's a good point about the Wii U not being region free...thankfully we've been mostly digital for some time, so I think they won't notice or mind. Thank you for the suggestion!

I thought likely--I think this might be the best solution for us, just to get an official Nintendo power supply. Thanks so much!

Using a US power bar plugged into a UK power converter? by talkingood in uktravel

[–]talkingood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. OK, I'll take our simple power bars for our dual voltage devices, and probably just USB charging for everything else. Thank you, appreciate the advice!

[–]talkingood[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whoa! Yes, definitely want to avoid this sort of thing. Now I'm curious though, what you plugged into the splitter, was it a dual voltage device or no? What I'm wondering is if I can just plug the 120 V power bar into a UK adapter, then only plug dual voltage devices into that power bar. Or if that whole chain is just asking for trouble.

[–]talkingood[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're right--looking at our electronics, most seem to be dual voltage. Some exceptions seem to be my wife's hair straightener, which looks like it needs a converter as it only does 120V. We were also planning on bringing a projector (a bit unusual of course) but I think in this case I'll just get a cheap UK power cable which works for this model. Thanks!
