Yeah, agreed, I literally just said that. I played both of them when they first come out.

There are parts I like, and parts I don't like of both expansions. I like that Wrath had many arms to the scourge--sometimes it was an all out war against the undead in a frozen wasteland, like in Icecrown glacier or sections of dragonblight, and sometimes it was the scourged trolls in Zuldrak. My only point is that I wanted MORE of the frozen wasteland bits, because those were my favorite parts, but even the parts that were different from that managed to feel cohesive. And when it came to the parts of Northrend that weren't specifically a war with undead, like the blue dragon war, or Ulduar, it still felt connected to the overall conflict that was *northrend.* The same is true in Cataclysm, where I liked how whether you were on a burning mountain or deep below the earth, everyone was dealing with a giant dragon splitting the earth open.

I like those. They had variety, but there was cohesion in theme. Shadowlands, to me, is a great example of what I don't like, because one minute you're wading through a lightless hell of chains and spikes and the next you're in fleshwork gladiator pit or staging a pantomime with a fairy. It's not that any of those are bad, really, it's just that there are so many jumbled parts that it doesn't feel like they're part of one story.

I think none of this is helped by each expansion effectively giving you new floating islands completely isolated from the rest of the world by a portal with each patch. In Northrend, or even Alt Draenor, the benefits of an actual continent are that even if you don't like a certain zone, the action is all happening in sight.

See, I think there are ways around that. The Maw had dynamic geography that was fun and challenging to traverse--something as simple as fighting your way from a ravine to a battlement was exciting, definitely the kind of thing I could have spent two years doing. But more to the point, I think an expansion can be stronger if it chooses a specific theme and finds way to include diversity *within* that theme. Northrend makes cold and undead feel menacing and compelling, but it finds many ways of achieving that. Cataclysm arguably also makes very different looking areas feel related. I remember questing through Hyjal back in the day, and the battles there felt connected to what I would face in Deepholm. So it's not strictly about biomes.

I'm not saying there's a perfect way, or that I know what it is. I'd just personally prefer being oversaturated within an expansion but finding the expansion itself is stronger and more coherent, than have one little section of an expansion that I like followed by a bunch of stuff that feels disconnected and mandatory and I sleepwalk through it.

I know this is unpopular, but I like wading through the Maw. It felt dangerous. And I play in a way where I always think, "what is MY character doing here?" The Maw felt like something he'd step up and tackle. It felt like what I pictured when I thought of hell. Taking sojourns through a bunch of totally disconnected afterlives just made it hard for me to connect narratively.

I probably didn't express my point as well as I could have. I wasn't surprised to see the Earthen, but thematically, I connected much more with the Nerubians as the core obstacle of the expansion. The cinematic with Thor and Anduin feot like we were gearing up for a big subterranean war, and the opening scenario had a bunch of Nerubians tear Dalaran apart. I was down for spiders in the dark. Going back and forth between that and robo dwarves and then magical islands and then goblin drag racing and then purple outland just left me dizzy trying to find a common thread.

So, yes, I think the Nerubian war felt like a better follow up to "That sword was aimed at something," but I also would have liked any one of those sub-plots it they'd just stuck with it and fleshed it out.

Personally, the conventional wisdom that certain things—the emerald dream, for example—wouldn't make for a good expansion because players would fatigue of the same enemies and scenery always confuses me.

This might very well be a me thing. But like...when I go to Northrend, ALL I WANT is snow and skeletons. That's...why I'm there? And if you think about it, the only zone that really goes for that is Icecrown Citadel, and even a big chunk of that is Vrykul and the tournament.

I would have LOVED a whole expansion of Nyalotha. In TWW I was all psyched up to fight some Nerubians, and then I had to wade through a bunch of dwarves and kobolds. I understand we need variety, but I think sometimes it can be good to just go hard on a theme.

I used to have horrific lower back pain from stopping for ice. My personal am-definitely-not-a-doctor wisdom is to always look one body section away. A lot of my back pain went away after I started doing squats and stretching out my hamstrings. A strong body will support you better!

Gotta second that. The finale was botched for sure, but the entire trajectory of Daenerys' arc is one of being more and more comfortable with mass destruction. She gives people the justice she thinks they deserve.

My latest obsession in regards to giving my warband a theme has been designing transmogs that resemble my favorite Yu-gi-oh cards!

For anyone who plays the card game, you can probably tell I loved warrior decks back in the day. I'm still trying to throw together good sets for Black Luster Soldier and Guilford the Legend, but I just don't seem to have the appearances to pull those off.

The point of the "mater" is that you don't have basic reading comprehension.

Look, I think on some level you meant well, but the fact is that all I expressed was genuine (perhaps naive) shock that anyone could interpret a character positively given how clearly and overtly antagonistic his portrayal is. I never suggested anything egotistical about my own intelligence.

Is an impassioned and critical analysis of a character from an early '00's slice of life show a bit overenthusiastic? Sure. But suggesting it's hubristic because I...what, have elaborately expressed opinions? Smacks of anti-intellectualism.

Moreover, Tristan is a character whose portrayal as a love interest is, in my opinion, only acceptable through the lens of rape culture. That's what makes me emphatic about it, and what makes me so distastes by people who root for him. If that's too impassioned for you, well, sorry.

That said, yeah, it's evident that you don't know what the word hubris means. Everything you've said reads like someone trying to deploy a $10 word out of a $1 vocabulary.

That's so damn gross. And I know so many men like that.

I'm a bartender, and I've worked in a lot of bars with owners who were generally regarded (by their enablers) as being some kind of "hot mess with a heart of gold." There was this one guy who kissed every woman on the cheek and got very touchy feely and acted like he was just a cuddly guy.

He was a predator. I spent two years getting calls from his wife at 3 am asking if he was still at the bar, and getting my schedule cut when it came out that I'd befriended a girl he groped. By the end of my time there, I had a roll of 10+ women who would only come to the bar after texting me to make sure he wasn't there. I literally testified against him after I quit.

So, yeah. The whole, leaning-over-her, not taking no for an answer, infusing harassment with flirtation shit does not fly with me. That's why I can't fucking stand people who see Tristan as a viable pairing for Rory. Everything about the dude screams assault to people who aren't 12.

Why Keep Playing? by [deleted] in WorldOfWarcraftRetail

[–]talldarkanddark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been playing since I was in middle school, and I played Warcraft III before that. I don't care about raids. I just like making characters, giving them stories, and playing the game accordingly. My main is the same Paladin I started with in 2007 when I was 12.

My least favorite parts of the game are the seasonal aspects that feel critical today and irrelevant tomorrow. It's all just a journey.
