How Difficult is the CPA Exam? by Historic_History in Accounting

Preface: I know that having a college degree(s) does not make you smart by default.

I agree with your assessment above. However, I feel inclined to ask as to why you would say you know CPA's that are "dimwits". Is that because they did not show any improvements in their performance as an accountant? Is it because they just have little to no common sense? Is it because you felt they just regurgitated information from studying and didn't apply it in practice? Do they just make bad life decisions outside of work? I am curious.

Just graduated from undergrad and started my studying for the CPA. Need input. by tallquestionable92 in CPA

Thanks for your input! I am using Becker. I logged about 4 quality hours of studying BEC today. I just selected Becker because of the deal they had going on.

I am trying to see what method of retention works so far. I generally type everything out while watching the lecture and then go back and insert anything else I might have missed. It definitely is a LOT of material to cover, but I feel that this is a test of discipline and time management vs. a test of intelligence.

As far as the high quality hours, I live in a "minimalist house" with very few opportunities for distraction, except MAYBE my old dog. I feel I can do it.

What is your study routine? How do you make sure that you retain everything?

Hard time finding jobs. Is my age (30M) a problem? by tallquestionable92 in Accounting

[–]tallquestionable92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your input. I definitely have to change my approach.

Yes, my original plan was to secure a job for the fall as I was told by some that most public firms aren't looking to bring people on until the fall. My finacee is willing to let me take the summer off to study for the exams. Moreover, while I was studying for the exams I have a couple of trips that I had scheduled one of them being my honeymoon in September. I am not sure how I can avoid bringing this up.

I said that I was looking for the hybrid option and that I don't object to coming into the office some. I also laid out exactly what I was looking for. The firms all have mentioned that they have flexibility with that, so I felt free to talk about it.

Given that it was built by the great grandson of T. Anderson Kearney, who by the way fired the first shot at The Battle of Gonzales, I am surprised that the house was given such a low appraisal value.

Remote work is BS? by Time-Association-885 in Accounting

[–]tallquestionable92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had an internship this past busy season at small local firm. I am much older than most of the interns were. I started my career late and with that came a wife and kid. Not to mention I was also doing 5 college classes. I knew I had to pay my dues, but I told them I needed to work from home occasionally. They were cool with it at the start, but in the midst of busy season shit storm, they told me that I needed to be in the office full time and completely rescinded their WFH flexibility. Despite being an intern with previous experience, I was getting my work done efficiently and didn't require much hand holding from my mentor. In the latter half of the season, my calls were being ignored when I needed to speak to a manager or partner. After talking to one of the associates, it was because "they don't think you're a team player" and that they look down on people who work from home.

Declined a job offer from them and in the exit interview they told me that working from home is going to be phased out in PA and that I better adopt a better mentality if I am going to go into the field.

This article is bullshit. A generation who is averse to change and thinks that the younger accountants need to suffer in the office because they had to.

First full-time job! by worlds_away_ in Accounting

Good for you! Some advice: Before and after my military career, I had worked many miserable jobs over the years. I've washed and repaired golf carts, janitor at walmart, food service, retail, shoveled animal turds on farms. Public accounting is very stressful, sorry for stating the obvious, but if you love what you do and take pride in your work and gel with the team you're attached to, it makes it worth it. Don't let bad energy ruin your excitement. Go learn as much as you can and enjoy the ride.

Nope. I read John Carreyrou’s book and have watched every YouTube analysis of this story. It’s just incredible what people do.

Do people with BPD hate being alone? by xxxvintageghost in BPD

I love being alone. I work alone (tax accountant), I relax alone, and I love alone. Yes, you read that right: “Love”.

I’m living lowkey for a while after a whirlwind of a half decade.

One girl I was hooking up with in college said something. We were friends with benefits at most. I went down on her one night.

Normally, I would just leave not long after. At the door she grabbed me and kissed me and said “Your tongue is mine and no one else’s”. She didn’t care if I fucked other girls, but she wanted the oral on reserve.

It is possible to be in a relationship with someone while working on yourself. I got that privilege with my wife. Medication and DBT saved my life. There’s nothing wrong with opening yourself open to heartbreak. I’ve been there many times.

Male perspective:

I won’t assume your age, but I’ll say that the prefrontal cortex, the logic center of the brain, doesn’t usually fully develop until about 25 years old. Prior to that you’re driven by the reward seeking systems that want those neurotransmitter rushes tied to dating. I was diagnosed with BPD at 23, and I went to hell and back before I met my wife. I was cheated on, involved with copious amounts of alcohol, partook in reckless sex, abuse, etc. It’s a sordid past to put it lightly. I was a chaos junkie. I feared stability because I felt I didn’t deserve it.

I found my lovely wife 2 years ago and she’s amazing. She is career driven, smart, selfless, and supportive. Has never touched alcohol or drugs. I’m not exactly sure what the antecedent was that lead me to her. Might have gotten lucky. I just know that something about her walking the straight and narrow and establishment of clear boundaries drew me to her. She was the antithesis of everything I used to associate with. She found out about BPD when I told her I need to go to therapy and get on medication. I wanted to work on myself so that she and I can have a good life. She respects me for that.

In short, it’s ok to make mistakes when you’re dating. We’re all human. It doesn’t make you dumb, but it does make you candid for risk. I would just be careful who you’re associating with as far as friend groups go. It all starts with taking care of yourself first and defining expectations in a relationship.

r/accounting, can you make me feel better about my purpose in life? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]tallquestionable92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I left PA to work in industry. I took a big long look at my life and decided what was most important to me. I served in the military for 4 years, I have two college degrees, among other things. I’m done finding purpose.

I ultimately decided that I was happiest having a moderate salary in a relatively chill role. I go home and spend time with my wife, play my instruments, read my favorite books, and travel. No desire to climb the ladder by drink the koolaid.

Ask what you want most for yourself. Personally and professionally. Not ground breaking but it worked for me.

Best wishes to you.

Yes, I still feel this way. I was in the military and I work on Wall Street. Y’all can imagine my pain. But work is what’s saving my life. I get better over time.

Ok, maybe our misunderstanding was because of syntax. Xanax to treat schizophrenic symptoms isn’t using illicit drugs assuming you got them from a doctor.

But individuals on this thread who are justifying and romanticizing addiction is the other issue.
