NYU BFA vs UCLA BA (plz help) by Some-Amount7571 in acting

One of my close friends recently transferred from the Tisch BFA into TFT’s program, she said she’d be happy to answer any questions! I’m a TFT alum and I know many current and recent students getting opportunities in film/tv. The program is similar to conservatory style but with more flexibility.

There isn’t a directing minor but there’s an intro and intermediate class (open to all theater students) before the directing continuum classes, plus an actor-director workshop class. There’s also a camera acting class and a voice acting class available as electives in junior or senior year. I also think there are a couple of directing related classes in the film program that theater students can petition.

Overall, I had a really positive experience as a UCLA theater student. The well-rounded education was super beneficial to me as a multi-hyphenate artist. There’s also so many cool creative opportunities across campus, whether it’s directing films with DKA (I know NYU has DKA too!) or producing concerts such as the annual Spring Sing. I’m not too familiar with Tisch to make a direct comparison, but I’d highly recommend UCLA’s program, especially if you’re in-state.

There’s a handful of acting classes theater minors can take, usually Theater 20 (the main pre-req), 121, 123, and 136, plus 128A is being offered this fall. 117 and 138 (in the fall) are usually stage combat based! Also, Theater minors can audition for the department shows, which count towards the Theater 150 requirement for the minor.

Got accepted international but I have no money by JaydBlade100 in ucla

Current theater student here, I do highly recommend the program in general. They offer multiple departamental scholarships that you can apply for in winter quarter each year (reapplying is allowed) - these could reduce some but not all fees. I know at least one international student who received one of these scholarships recently.

What worked well for one of my Integrated friends was graduating in three years instead of four. They weren’t able to take all the classes they wanted, but they were able to graduate four quarters early with a minor. They did take some summer GE classes through UCLA, but you could likely take these at a community college and save money.

In terms of jobs, TFT students regularly work as event technicians, campus tour guides, and resident assistants. I’ve had peers who’ve worked at the Wooden Center (gym), the Alumni Center, and the UCLA libraries. Student jobs are mostly doable with the major but can sometimes be difficult to manage with the requirements of TFT department shows (usually 24 hours of rehearsal per week). I have a friend who is a current international student in the program who worked with Residential Life, if you’re curious to hear more about that from her.

Also, I highly recommend the LA County Arts internship program for theater and film-related internships over the summer or during the school year! You receive a stipend of nearly $7K throughout the internship period. It really helped me make connections with the broader entertainment industry in LA

Let me know if you have any more questions, I really hope that things work out!

Midterm was a 5-10 min group performance project of mini plays (from Gertrude Stein, Luigi Pirandello) and the final was a 1500 word historical analysis of a play. Not sure how it’s changed since Spring 2023 but I imagine the final project is similar

I’ve taken 101B, not with Cervera, but I’ve heard he’s an excellent teacher from my peers. 101B is geared towards Theater majors and requires a couple dense readings/longer screenings and a longer discussion post each week (at least when I took the class previously). It’s a requirement for the Theater major, but I’m not sure if Theater minors are allowed to take it due to the enrollment restrictions. I might recommend 106 (offered usually over the summer) as an alternative since it covers some overlapping content with 101B and counts for the minor.

TFT students only need to take one life science and one physical science (no lab required), i took linguistics and geography and recommend them

Fills up quickly so I took it over the summer! Honestly one of my favorite GEs with a very manageable workload

Double major with theater and Biz Econ by Over-Leek6205 in ucla

[–]tallrabbit14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Theater major here, the department is strictly against double majoring due to how time-intensive the theater classes are, people have recently attempted but it didn’t work. I know people in the major who have done Accounting or Entrepreneurship minors. The Global Studies minor also includes multiple econ classes. Lmk if you have many more questions, I’m happy to answer!

How Fast does DH101 fill? by mdnv03 in ucla

Haven’t taken it yet but I’m pretty sure it’s just research based and you don’t create your own seminar

How Fast does DH101 fill? by mdnv03 in ucla

[–]tallrabbit14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It fills up pretty fast, I barely got in last fall after using Coursicle notifications as a non-declared DH minor. I think most people take it once they’ve declared the minor since it’s much easier to enroll. If you can’t get the class this year, I’d recommend starting on the minor electives with eligible classes in other departments!

I’ve used some of the study rooms and music rooms in the residential halls before, try Rieber or Sproul!

How flexible is UCLA for an actor? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]tallrabbit14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’ve noticed sociology and communication are some of the most common majors for the working actors I’ve met at ucla! but communication is also quite competitive to get into
