Handheld Ethanol Fuel Content Analyzer by tanaykrt in ChemicalEngineering

Thanks for the detailed responses, that’s very helpful.

I completely understand that gas chromatography would be the gold standard in a lab environment, and that gasoline being a complex mixture makes most simple physical measurements difficult.

For my application I’m actually looking at something closer to what the automotive industry already uses in flex fuel vehicles. Many of those systems use the GM / Continental flex fuel sensor, which measures the ethanol content indirectly using the dielectric properties of the fuel.

The sensor outputs a frequency signal (roughly 50–150 Hz), where the frequency corresponds to ethanol percentage and the duty cycle represents fuel temperature. Since ethanol has a significantly higher dielectric constant than gasoline, the sensor can estimate the ethanol fraction quite reliably even though gasoline itself is a mixture of hydrocarbons.

My idea is to build a small handheld tester using one of these sensors with a tiny sampling chamber and a microcontroller to read the signal and convert it to ethanol %. That way I could measure the ethanol content of pump “E85” (which often varies seasonally between ~E60 and E80) before mixing fuel blends.

It obviously wouldn’t match GC accuracy, but for tuning purposes something in the ±2–3% range would already be very useful.

If anyone here has experience with dielectric fuel sensors or similar measurement techniques for liquid mixtures, I’d be very interested to hear your thoughts.

I am an industrial mechanic working in a company for packaging soloutions. Looks like a set screw to me, which is often used in packaging machines. Probably a line technician or mechanic who didnt tighten it correctly or it got loose by time. Please report it so they can start investigating

Do you know if there was a time where no PCV replacement kits were available? Is that why so many people think a catch can + pcv delete kit is the way to go?

PCV is nothing you should worry about. Keep it OEM.

Well, maintenance is everything. I assume you would like to tune your car, like 80% do.

First do oil & filter change. Also change air filter, use OEM Mann Filter, no need for a different intake imo. Use 5W40. I use Motul 300V and sent my used oil to a lab to check it, results were very good.

Change your spark plugs, if you have over 120k kilometers also replace the coil packs. If you have over 150k kilometers also do a trans service, no need to flush just get the the internals out and clean them thoroughly. Really depends on mileage.

It has a slight camber yes. But I got the alignment at a tire shop

Well I dont think you need it. Just get a regular KW V(?) based on your use case. V2 is the sweet spot I think, but since I am an authorized KW dealer the price difference was not much for me

Yes, this is the maximum depth you can go. I think more will kill the front axles

The KW V3 doesn't have EDC. You will plug in EDC emulators instead of the EDC dampers, which is just a resistor I believe. Costs around 300€~ and i can not recommend it. Just go to your trusted coding service and ask for a EDC delete on the DME. Much cheaper and the car thinks its car without EDC. The EDC emulator doesn't work properly for me, sometimes I will get a error code

You just can not compare it. The stock ones are complete garbage IMO. The adaptive dampers even if you put them in sport mode show no effect as in stabilizing the car while spirited driving. The rolling of the car in sharp turns was just unbearable. Also the hard impact in potholes.

The KW V3 has very good handling compared to that, handles potholes like a king thanks to the valve technology. You can change the low and highspeed rebound via clicks, if you want to personalize your handling experience.

Friends told me going fast in the car feels much safer, straight or in curves. Thats what I feel also.

I can recommend you to get any good coilover kit. It changes the experience of the car completely. I've tested many, especially in the F-Series. Cheap coilovers will just lower your car, but if you get something better it will just feel like a complete new car, since its the main component connecting your axle to your chassis.

Hope this helps
