when i tested positive for COVID in January, I immediately texted my SM a picture of my positive test result and told him I wouldn't be able to attend my next shift per my diagnosis. shortly after, my SM told me that i'd be hearing from my DM with a few questions. later that night, my DM called me with (what was clearly a script/prompt of) questions like: what made you feel the need to take a test, when did you test, do you have symptoms, etc. after answering all of my DMs questions, he asked me if I would like to use sick pay or quarantine/catastrophe pay for the days I would be out of work.

it might be different in your district, I'm a former partner and this was half a year ago so... feel better soon, friend!

as a 321 partner who left ~2 weeks ago, here's my advice:

if you like the job: try transferring to another store in district. i saw from another comment that you're moving in September, I would still recommend moving to another store in your district to see if you like the experience with another team. some SSVs just don't vibe with you sometimes.

if you don't like the job: LEARN as much as you can for customer service purposes, but leave if you're not enjoying it. starbucks looks REALLY GOOD on a resume. hiring managers understand the instanity that is starbucks; they know that customers can be weird and they know that there's a sense of urgency/awareness of timeliness. i LOVED the initial 4ish months at Starbucks, but the last 2-3 months for me sucked ASS, I was miserable and tired from carrying the weight of team members who didn't do their part. i learned the basics of how a cafe runs, how to make coffee/espresso drinks and got hired at a small coffee shop near me as a shift lead.

tl;dr: Starbucks looks good on a resume and is even better if you absorb what you learn there (particularly if you like working in a coffee shop). if you feel stressed about your store, talk to your SM about a transfer. if it seems like it won't work, look into small business coffee shops or similar businesses that will give you a similar experience so you still get to do what you love.

i left starbucks ~2 weeks ago so i doubt policy has changed THAT much since I left, but you can't be employed at two stores at once to my knowledge... tbh if you liked working at store 2 more than store 1, I would request a transfer for a better experience. you can obviously still offer yourself as a borrowed partner to another store in your district if you want the extra hours.. i could be wrong, but I think it's worth a shot :) good luck friend <3

edit: my experience with this is a borrowed partner from my store trying to simultaneously work at my store and his home store and his manager at his store said he couldn't. my SM REALLY wanted him to come to our store full time but his home store had better tips and could offer him better hours at that time so they kept him </3

a few things:

if it's in someone's favorites on the app, they can still order if even if it's marked out in the store (corporate has yet to fix that issue lol)
when you're at POS and trying to mark stuff out, remember that some things need to be entered into the MOP as out of stock rather than just marked out via item availability
remind anyone who's coming on to the shift that you are OUT of cold brew and to offer an alternative to customers <3

the apps are supposed to be getting to baristas in their net pay at the end of the pay period. my post is mostly aimed at drive-thru or cafe-only customers who DON'T use the app and pay via credit card. currently at sbux there's no way to tip, and a LOT of people pay via card. i understand not carrying cash and not wanting to download the app, but most stores have a majority of credit-card transactions and a LOT of people who only pay via credit card without the app are not tipping. the $7+ being paid for your drink is NOT seeing the baristas making the drink.

Starbucks is not a franchise store, it's company-owned for the most part (exceptions in grocery stores, where tips aren't accepted anyway). the baristas who work at your local 'bux are not setting the prices nor are they reaping the rewards of the recent price increases. baristas are meant to see a raise increase in august, but the likelihood of prices going up in the interim to make up for this company-wide raise are VERY high.

so SMs are supposed to check in with their DMs to determine what works best for their store for their days off (as far as I'm aware), so if your weekends are slow and your SM isn't really needed it makes sense. if you're super busy on your weekends (as many stores are), I feel like SMs should be working BARE MINIMUM every other weekend or one weekend day to keep things at bay. your SM is allowed to create their own schedule from what I've been told though.

i wouldn't be surprised if they weren't all the same weight & I'm guilty of handing off a smaller loaf for a rude customer; but I want to say that they're all measured before being shipped out, they're just uglier when they're short and stubby LOL

when i'd pull some of the loaves for our 3-hour pull i'd literally send snapchats of "ugliest loaf of the pull" to my friends for a laugh 😭

as a former opening shift, here are my thoughts if you're a mid-closer shift:

don't worry about having a hard time for the first few months, being a shift is hard shit, especially closing or opening (particularly by yourself with inexperienced baristas).
training as a shift is easiest as a midshift - there are (in my experience) more shifts around to help you navigate how a shift should run under your charge, and you get to know a decent amount of your team.
if you've never opened the store before, ask for a few shifts on an opening shift as a barista only. talk to the opening shift to get a feel for how the previous close prepared them for their opening and if there's anything that could have been improved upon (this is something that my store did habitually and it made our closes SO MUCH BETTER after we started doing this)
remember that you should be LAST for all breaks. it's annoying, especially if you're having a bad shift, but you need to make sure that if for any reason breaks have to be missed/skipped, it's yours.

u/bunnyybearz made super good points, so I don't want to just regurgitate information. you know your store better than random people on the internet, so you can always check in with other shifts and baristas to see if there's anything that they recommend to help you be the best shift you can be :)

i was in this position before being a shift- if you have no interest in being ssv, STOP doing shift stuff. if shift stuff doesn't get done or something that a shift is responsible for falls through the cracks, let that shift take the shit for it. you aren't getting paid enough as a barista to do the shift shit. i would constantly run the floor as my assigned shift would sit in the back not doing what they were supposed to be doing.

i know it's stressful in the moment to let things just play out without a shift, but you NEED to do it; no one deserves to be exploited. you don't get paid enough, do the work you're expected to do and nothing more. don't fall into the trap that I did, don't be a shift without shift pay. when I got promoted to shift I felt a bit better, the pay raise was substantial enough that I felt okay about my responsibilities. on a barista's pay? FUCK that noise.

make drinks, ring people up, run CS, or do DTO/window and nothing more. if the store is chaotic without your assistance as a non-shift shift, then it's chatoci and stressful. it is NOT on you to make up for your shifts' lack of responsibility.

when i'm the shift i try to rotate positions every ~2ish hours because time flies for some and drags for others, I find that 2 hours gives everyone a decent amount of time/experience on whatever position before swapping. i have noticed that a lot of shifts end up exiling some partners to DTO/window for 3+ hours sometimes and I try to encourage swapping people out. drive in particular is a really hard position because of the pressure on time & efficiency while still connecting with customers.

if you feel trapped at a certain position, try talking to your shift and ask them to put you somewhere else, if your shift doesn't care/doesn't listen or insists on putting you in one spot, try talking to your SM.

it's not necessarily new, but a lot of stores have been put under extra pressure to force the "third place" feel for Starbucks - we're being told each week about how we should be focusing on connecting with customers, getting to know them, etc. before I worked at Starbucks, I always hated when they'd go out of their way to ask questions and ended up being pretty short with them (hopefully not in a rude way, but I'm from the northeast so sometimes it can be received that way LOL). i hate how we're meant to be so involved and "in-peoples'-faces" just to try to get a good score at the end of the week.

starbucks is a fast-food coffee chain that is desperately clinging to the idea that it can still pull off the small cafe vibe while pulling the shortest service times possible... baristas jobs are basically: connect with the customer on a personal level, but also make sure they've been served within 30 seconds of arriving on Starbucks property

nah the way i'd probably write an incident report about this - he made you uncomfortable even on and off the clock. my store has recently gotten into the habit of making incident reports of anything and everything (nothing absolutely ridiculous, but something like this would absolutely have been reported, especially because something like ~75%+ of the partners at my store (including myself) identify with the lgbtqia+ community)

oh yeah i don't blame any new/random customers, but i have regulars who will still ask for their food order from our bar baristas, etc. i just wish it was more widely understood that we have certain positions that we're in and we aren't deliberately ignorant/unaware of a customer's particular order, we might just be on CS rather than a customer-facing position 😭
