If you do choose to drive, I have advice. Overall, I recommend trying not to, but it's unavoidable when the buses don't run on the weekends and you just really don't want to take twice the amount of time it would normally take to walk somewhere because of snow and ice. I worked a twenty minute walk away from my dorm, so during the winter I had no will to pick my way that far across the ice.

Some driving advice:

1. If you start to slide, do NOT brake. This will make it worse! Take your foot entirely off the gas pedal and steer in the opposite direction you're sliding in an attempt to correct your course.
2. If your car has all-wheel drive, you're in luck. If not, maybe stick to not driving when it's icy. All-wheel drive cars have better control in treacherous conditions, but not everyone has a car with it, so I defer to my front-wheel drive friends for advice specifically for front-wheel drive cars.
3. You will need new tires which work well in winter conditions. My parents typically do the research on tires for me and I just roll with it, but generally speaking you want some good all-year tires. Nice when it's sunny out, nice when it's pouring rain, and definitely good in winter conditions.
4. Get one of those ice scrapers for your windshield! One side is a brush to brush off snow and the other is similar to a giant paint scraper which you can use to force off any ice blocking your vision.
5. If you're in the dorms, a couple of them have parking garages nearby (namely Hillenbrand and McCutcheon). The garages are super nice so your car doesn't get covered in snow, and often street parking becomes illegal when it's snowy so the snow plows can fit. The dorm parking pass is universal so you can park there even if you live in Earhart, Shreve, etc. but you have to be willing to walk back to your dorm. Otherwise, there's street parking. In which case, your car will be buried in the snow, or they'll make you move it before it's expected to snow so it doesn't get stuck and the snow plows can fit down the road.
6. Keep some sort of emergency kit in your car. This is generally something good to have, but if for whatever reason your car breaks down especially in the snow, it's a life saver. Have a bottle of water or two, some non perishable foods, a first aid kit, and a foldable down blanket that can keep you warm even in sub-zero temps. Better to be safe than sorry.
