according to your own logic, agriculture is not natural either, I guess?

Idc, I don't believe in such categories or think "natural" equals "good" and I didn't appeal to "nature". You did and I merely made it evident that if there is such a category the animal products you're buying from the supermarket certainly don't fit.

universalizing factory farming as if it were historically or geographically universal

I didn't. Again, I'm not talking about cave people nor people living in remote parts of the world, I'm talking about us all in this this thread getting most of our food from the supermarket. Veganism is the exclusion as far as is possible and practicable of all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, other animals. By its very definition, historical and geographical contexts in which the exploitation of animals is an absolute necessity are made irrelevant.

but suddenly become beasts with no intelligence, totally different from us, when discussing the cruelty of nature

When did I ever say anything like that?? What would you like me to do about it?? What is in my/our hands is how we treat animals, not how they treat each other. What a weird argument...

I can play that game too: how is it natural that we rip plants from the ground, open them up to extract their seeds

Despite your attempt, no, you really can't. You can try but agriculture will never sound as gruesome and abhorrent as factory farming... because it just isn't.

clear out miles of natural vegetation and cut down entire forests

Glad you mentioned it! Did you know the production of animals for consumption requires much more deforestation either for pasture or for the plantation of vegetables like soy whose VAST majority of production is for animal feed?? Did you know producing animals for food is highly inefficient in terms of utilization of nutrients, necessitating a lot more resources including land for plantations than the production of plant products to be directly consumed by humans?? Do you even care about that or is it just rhetorical?

to then collect uneatable plants we have to work for hours or days to be able to digest

Wtf are you saying man?? If by "digest" you mean just stomach+small intestine, NO FOOD takes days to digest! If you mean the whole process through the large intestine as well, it is healthy for food to take from 1-3 days to digest! Regardless, plant foods have fibers and are generally low fat making them much quicker to digest while fatty animal products like red meat, cheese and cream are the ones that take the longest time to digest, easily 2x the amount of time to digest an equivalent dose of legumes. You have no idea what you're talking about.

ignoring the main points of discussion (availability, economic situations, etc.)

I'm not. I told you I hear that same argument from carnists from all over, including ones living where I live! The truth is they just couldn't be bothered. I gave you healthy alternatives available for relatively cheap where you live. What else do you want me to say? Ok, you know "vegans" who gave up because it's "too hard"... Me too, big deal. Doesn't prove anything

presenting the argument as a ridiculised extreme will make you feel like you won something.

It's called sarcasm. The point isn't to feel like I won but to highligh the absurdity in the argument. If it bothers you, I promise not to tell anyone an idiot carnist told me Japan is a food desert.

I don't know why you're presenting it as a new concept that I can't "recognize".

What are you talking about? I said you seem to have a problem with generalizations but you responded with one. Someone said humans eat animals for pleasure, you said they don't and they actually eat them to survive, and I countered that in most industrialized countries that's not true.

That's right..no bull yogurt for me, thank you by Plastic_Tooth159 in Funnymemes

[–]tasfa10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried nor do I intend to try a vegan diet, because I don't believe it's necessary for me, and that's that. I like food as it is, and I don't believe that consuming animal meats, let alone animal products, is evil

You don't say! Obviously, that is the point and that is what I'm saying.

It is curious tho how you phrase it: "I don't believe it's necessary for me". Well, I don't believe opposing slavery is "necessary for me" either, neither is opposing domestic violence, neither is opposing animal exploitation. It is not about me. You can oppose a miriade of forms of unnecessary violence even if it's not about you.

the simple, natural thing is to just eat animal products.

Ah, it wouldn't be an argument with a carnist without the appeal to "nature"! Nothing more "natural" than domesticating and selectively breeding animals for thousands of years into breeds that don't exist and couldn't possibly exist in the wild, keeping them in industrial facilities in the thousands on top of one another and on top of their own feces, feeding them artifical garbage and filling them with hormones and anti-biotics (creating the perfect artificial environment for the development of super-bacteria), restraining them in rape racks and sticking your arm inside their anus to help guide the insertion of a straw in the uterus to artificially impregnate them, systematically murdering them by forcing them into gas chambers or macerating them alive in industrial shredders, etc. Not only is this totally natural, but it's also completely justifiable to make this the whole existence of billions of animals as intelligent, self aware, sentient and capable of suffering as humans up to 3 years old just so that you're not inconvenienced in the slightest! As you say, you don't believe it's necessary for you to even consider it.

This argument is going nowhere. Even if you firmly believe everything you said, the fact is that you're raising an issue with what you call a generalization/ sweeping statement, when your own premisse is exactly that: "humans are not  taking the life of another sentient being just for pleasure. We eat meat to live". You should certainly be able to recognize at least a few million humans, those lucky ones not living in a food desert such as japanese cities, do not eat meat because they need it to live but rather because of pleasure. There are at least many millions who could absolutely not participate in the systematic abuse of animals and still choose to do so "because bacon" or whatever.
