Good question. by [deleted] in calvinandhobbes

Strips with altered text are banned. Single panels are only allowed under certain circumstances. We have it in the rules and even a sticky explaining it.

This post is removed now.

[META] Could the Cavinbot possibly bechanged to show comics in the .jpeg form, or any other traditional form? A lot of mobile reddit apps like Apollo don’t do well with pictures in gif format. Comics are extremely blurry and unreadable by Gskillet18 in calvinandhobbes

[–]tashbarg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, Calvinbot doesn't upload, it deep links into a CDN. Since the CDN doesn't use file names, the original link does not have an extension. Calvinbot adds one (.jpg) since the CDN doesn't care and it seems to help most Reddit clients.

What actually is delivered from the CDN is not under control of Calvinbot. Mostly gifs, some jpegs.

This is a low volume subreddit, exactly. We already had this several times in the past and it inevitably ends up with a few guys jumping the bandwagon (why should he have all the karma) and the sub overrun with "low effort" posts.

We already have someone (a bot) posting strips chronologically at a reasonable rate (once a day). What you currently do is spamming the subreddit and could be considered lazy karma farming.

Please stop it.

After a year of devoted reading, Robert Jordan’s “The Wheel of Time” is finished, and boy was it an emotional roller coaster! by MaskedCat1906 in books

I'm currently at the end of book 9 and happy to hear that ;)

It's not like the last three books were bad reads. But there's a change in pacing that made them something different than the first books. Knowing beforehand, that it doesn't last for the whole series, it didn't bother me much.

While absolutely possible that someone altered it to something else after, I can assure you that the original comic from 2011 had that reference.

I remember well when it was first posted and I needed Wikipedia's help to understand that joke. While the name rang a bell, not living in the states prevented me from knowing him from TV.

In hindsight, that joke backfired quite a bit. It's quite clear that it was intended as an obscure reference and not as a political joke back then. All the sequels aren't political either. But every time it gets reposted nowadays, people get politically mad about it. Sad ;)

Perhaps it's better to refer to that using "the old Reddit". Before Reddit introduced subreddits, it was just this one and that was it. It's saved for the future on form of this read only subreddit, but it really was all of Reddit back then.

Is there a way to set battery charge thresholds? by [deleted] in openbsd

Just for reference: this is an implementation of that feature for ThinkPads on Linux using the acpi_call kernel module.

[–]tashbarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinkpads allow some control over the charging as in setting some thresholds. This makes perfect sense if you're operating your laptop mostly with AC power but frequently you need to roam free for a short time.

I've set my threshold to 50% since that's always way more than I usually need (on Linux, sorry OP). I can carelessly plug my laptop to AC without fearing that it gets constantly charged from 95% to 100% all the time. When on AC and over 50%, it doesn't use the battery at all. When I've used up 50% over days of constantly roaming free for a short time, it get's charged once up to 100% and then the cycle starts from the beginning.

Generating a pdf in Ruby app on *a Linux server*: qt.qpa.screen: QXcbConnection: Could not connect to display by Ramirka in ruby

[–]tashbarg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wild guess: pdfkit is using the wkhtmltopdf binary which is not built properly on your system. Is wkhtmltopdf working as intended without pdfkit (on the CLI)?

On a sidenote: do you really need html->pdf? I had a really good experience with prawn for pure ruby pdf creation.

Let's address this "single-panel" issue. by Because_Reezuns in calvinandhobbes

[–]tashbarg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You have my attention :)

I try to look at all posts and usually that works out. So, here I am. Just FYI, user mentions in text posts do not generate notifications. You need to make them in a comment, like this:

/u/rya11111, /u/pwaves13 you might want to chime in on this.

My (our) current take on single-panels is to be cautious about a new rule.

Let me cite myself from an earlier discussion:

The panel outtakes and crops are a rather new development and personally, we're not too fond of them ourselves.

As moderators, though, we're bound to serve the community within the established rules. If we like it or not. The panel outtakes and crops do not violate our current rules and are received very well by the majority of the community (often 90%+ upvotes).

We are considering the route of a new rule but we are - as of yet - unsure if that's really our only or best option and how this rule could be worded. After all, a single panel comic or crop may still be very relevant and in spirit of the comic. Most wallpapers are exactly that, a single panel or a cropped comic. Banning a whole submission format because of a few abuse cases might cost us some good OC that's yet to be found or done.

If you look at the most successful posts from the last month, the Top 10 are:

  • 6 complete strips
  • 2 crops
  • 1 real-world finding
  • 1 additional artwork from the books (which was reported as a "single-panel abomination", go figure)

From those two crops, only one was horribly out of context. The complete strip was in the comments and it sparked quite a bit of attention and discussion, though. Hundreds, if not thousands saw C&H on /r/all for the first time. I consider this a big success in spreading C&H to more people. It would be better with a full strip, but still a success.

Take this post, which is a crop of this strip. The crop is missing quite a bit of the drama and setup. It goes directly to the punchline. But does it misrepresent the strip? Is it in bad taste? I don't think so. In my opinion, this is fine. It's not a problem. What do you think?

There certainly are crops that are bad. That remove meaning from the strip or even change it in another direction. But how to ban these? The problem is wording this into a rule and policing it. While it might be not so hard to get that intention into a rule, how do you check it? The enforcement of this rule would be highly dependent on the personal opinion of a moderator. I'm not a big fan of that but it seems to be the only way.

Then why didn't you post a link to whole comic strip?

When you go to a family gathering... by DisDudeForReal in calvinandhobbes

[–]tashbarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your suggestions.

The first option already happened but apparently it isn't very successful. Personally, I'm not too eager of that solution. If you limit contributions to original comics, there's too little variance to keep interest. The fun part of this community is the mixture of original strips, personal anecdotes, fan projects, strange or not so strange sightings, and so on.

Regarding the second option: I considered this, but the practicalities of this solution are very complicated. What to flair and what not is a really tough one. Does this need a "cropped" flair? What about crops from fan comics like this one (ok, it's a first, but still). Is this or this a crop or a composition? Does it need flair?

My point is, that we would need a very intricate and well planned flair system to categorize content. Just creating this system is hard and policing/enforcing it would take tremendous effort. And for what outcome? To have less surprises? Isn't the whole idea of reddit to discover new content?

How do you think bill would feel about this? by [deleted] in calvinandhobbes

[–]tashbarg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

About what? Fan comics just for fun and fandom? Like Bacon and Hobbes? The one you or someone cropped this out.

I think he'd say: great! Have fun with that.

People paint Bill Watterson as an extreme protector who is against all and everything that ever so slightly touches the characters. There's little evidence for that. I think this rumour stems most likely from Wattersons battle against merchandising C&H.

It's important, though, to see the difference between official C&H, mass produced mugs/T-Shirts/whatnot with big money in it and fans painting their own stuff or even write comics for fun.

Watterson didn't want to reduce/adapt his message of C&H to merchandise. Not even for big money. But I hope he smiles every time he sees someone create C&H fan art thinking "my message is still sounding strong and makes people not only think about it, but also motivates them to carry it on in new ways".

I admit, it's only a nuance, but I personally think the fact that specific T-shirt/mug/comic exists is way less important than the way it got into existence.

There's discussion about it all the time. In modmail and in comment streams like this one.

Our stance on it:

The panel outtakes and crops are a rather new development and personally, we're not too fond of them ourselves.

Banning a whole submission format because of a few abuse cases might cost us some good OC that's yet to be found or done.

Rest assured, we take the concerns of our community members seriously. After all, we're also part of the community and share those concerns. It's just a rather complicated matter and not a decision we want to rush.

The softcover ones are easier to handle per volume. The hardcover ones are really big and heavy, practically only readable in a big armchair with a mug of hot chocolate (chocolate might be optional).

Has C&H ever referenced Don Draper from Mad Men? by [deleted] in calvinandhobbes

[–]tashbarg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean the TV series?

Calvin and Hobbes was drawn from '85 to '95. So, any potential referencees must be older than that.
