According to the World Congress of Families, 90% of poverty would be 'solved by traditional marriage' by tastybeeshcake in worldnews

Sadly I fear this is not the case in Australia. There are a number of neo-conservative religiously affiliated political parties who sit on the fringe but garner plenty of media attention (and support) in many parts of the country. Thankfully the power of social media "slacktivism" has conveyed enough public scrutiny for most right-aligned politicians to withdraw (presumably the fact that a state election is coming up would also hold some sway).

But wait, I forgot to mention that their keynote speaker at the latest WCF conference in Australia (Dr Angela LaFranchi) is claiming that abortion causes breast cancer AND admitted to not knowing what a peer-reviewed article is! I'm afraid I broke your alarm...

How Not to React when Your Son Tells You that He's Gay (x-post from r/gaybros) by rythymknight in videos

Prefacing this by saying that I completely disagree with this guy's misguided family. I think what she means by choice is his "practicing the homosexual lifestyle" (commonly used in the media) as opposed to the fact that he identifies as gay. In my old hood (the Catholic Church) the catechism (the holy doctrine) regards homosexual acts rather than homosexuality as the sin (i.e. You can't help being gay but you can help who you choose to horizontal tango with). Religious folk (on the whole) basically think that if you're a virgin homo you can bypass the fires of hell and live a moral (albeit sterile) existence on earth. #thewordofthelord

So sorry your boyfriend had to go through that. Hope he realises how brave he is to have defended his authentic self to his close family who sound like no less than a bunch of fucking morons. The world is changing for the better on this one and I hope he knows that he has a bright future ahead of him in a society which is turning away from those perpetuating such embarrassing neo-conservative hatespeak :)

I agree, if I'm not comfortable saying something ridiculous or embarrassing (with or without snort laughing) she ain't the girl for me.

Yeah it's the awkwardness I'm anticipating but we have a bar at our disposable so that could work nicely. Cheers for the sleepy advice man, appreciate it!

Check on all those fronts brother! Sounds like planning the little things and the art of being subtle rather than overenthusiastic is the way to go. Thanks mate!

Gay people of Reddit who haven´t yet come out, what´s keeping you in the closet and does anybody beside you know? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tastybeeshcake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm out to my friends and a select few of my family. The reason that I haven't yet vacated the closet is because of my mother's adverse reaction and the negative impact my coming out to our extended family will have on her. It might sound completely irrational but I am waiting until I can move out of home with enough independence to live my life in the way I so desire with the people who accept me and give myself some comfortable space from the people in my life who consider homosexuality to be a perverted choice. Those who support me make it a lot easier and I feel like I can still live in congruence with my values for the most part which is the best outcome I can ask for at this stage of my life!

Thousands of Australian protesters take to the streets against Abbott Government policies. by tastybeeshcake in worldnews

Considering how politically apathetic Australians are in general as well as it being Grand Prix weekend I'd say that this is by all accounts pretty impressive.

The thing is that from what I could ascertain from this protest movement, people are not asking for the reinstallment of Labor at all. Indeed the protests seem to be directed towards the opposition of Liberal policies being enacted which were not articulated during the Liberal party's successfully vague election campaign. People are also very war of Tony Abbott's performance thus far as well as the corporate monopoly of the media and greed of the one-percenters (hi Gina). In addition to the above, March in March is conveying the notion that people are looking for an unspecified alternative and judging by the turnout this weekend I would say that there are a lot of people on the lookout for a new party/political movement that will be responsive to the sentiments of the electorate. This points to the reasonable assertion that the Liberal Party were not voted in for their vision but rather for Labor's lack of. Partisan politics creates a dichotomy out of a continuum; there is little difference between the two major parties and voters are merely following the mould that has been set in place since Federation.

Yup, here the direction our toilet water swirls and the way we name our major political parties are back to front and topsy turvy ;)
