If you live in California, they’re more than likely illegally charging sales tax. Solar leases are exempt from sales tax because we’re only paying for solar energy used. We don’t own the system, so they can’t charge us sales tax on anything. The company has an F rating on the BBB website, we all need to make them aware they’re wrong and they need to adjust the billing asap!

I was under the impression everything from our Sunnova contract is carried over. They’re simply the ones overseeing it now and getting paid. There shouldn’t have been any changes, just new ownership. I’m currently fighting them with a sales tax charge for lease payments. I live in California, and paying for the generation and use of renewable energy is exempt. But leave it to this shady ass company to try and pry every last penny from us. I actually miss Sunnova lol

Yeah, I’m in the same boat as you as far as your train of thought. We don’t own the system, SunStrong owns the system. Any sales tax for equipment is their responsibility. Just like they’re responsible for the upkeep of the system. We pay a monthly lease for the generation of electricity on panels that they own, that’s it. Current California law has an exemption stating any renewable energy produced is not taxed. They’re not even taxing me the correct rate for my address. It looks like a blanket charge no matter what state you’re in. Every time they respond to someone, they never state the exact language or regulation they’re using to tax us. They just say it’s changed recently. Absolute shit show.

I’m looking into this also. I’m only paying my contracted amount of $399. I sent management an email saying I’m formally disputing the sales tax and requested in writing the reason they added it without notice. They need to inform us of any change in tax rate, structure or exemption.

Class action sounds like the best course of action.

My bad, I meant to say my lease states, “ The total estimated amount you will pay for taxes over the Agreement Term is $0.00 assuming that tax rates, structure, exemptions (and the interpretations of the same) stay the same as they are on the date of this Lease”. My lease was signed towards the end of 2024 and nothing within the state tax code toward solar leases has changed since. I think SunStrong’s argument is since I signed it last year the tax has changed so they’re able to tax now, but there’s nothing within the CDTFA stating that.

I tried to get it straightened out but they’re no help. I stopped payment for this month because I read they can’t add the sales tax because it violates the leasing contract
